Reducing excessive font size (IE 6.0 on XP Home)

When I try looking at Microsoft's Knowledge Base, the text is humongous and nothing I try reduces it to a readable size. What's wrong and how do I fix it?

Have you tried View | Text Size ? There are 5 options; perhaps your setting has accidentally changed to 'Extra Large'.

Yep! First thing I tried; and several times since.

Select Tools | Internet Options..., activate the General tab (if necessary) and click Accessibility. If the "Ignore font sizes specified on Web pages" box is checked, try clearing it. On my system, text size in the Knowledge Base is relatively large with this setting checked (although I wouldn't call it humongous).

Otherwise, I have no idea what could cause this.

All the Accessibility boxes are unchecked! What seems particularly peculiar is that the Microsoft Knowledge Base is the ONLY web thing that does this. I was asked "how big" and I can't really tell -- I'm guessing that it is like 120 point type -- definitely larger than 72 points.

Sorry, no idea. But you're not the only one, I found a newsgroup post complaining about the same problem here, unfortunately without replies.

    Ghaud--

What impact on KB fonts does going to Tools>Internet Options>Accessibility and putting a check in "ignore fonts specified on web pages" then going to the MSKB and using your scroll wheel by holding down the Ctrl key?

It didn't change a thing. Measured the dot over the i in Microsoft, on my 15" TFT monitor it is 2-3/4" square, just to give you an idea of how humongous this font thing is.

I'm sorry, but that is so funny. My guess is that it would look correct in Mozilla. Anyone want to take me up on that?

But seriously. Perhaps Microsoft's style sheet has become corrupted in your cache? If you go into your Temporary Internet Files folder and

Perhaps I'm not doing it right, but I don't find any Cascading Style Sheets in any of the four Temporary Internet Files that show up on an XP Search. Incidentally, I can see the Knowledge Base items OK (though sometimes erratically) in Netscape 4.79 and Opera 7.10. So the problem has to be related somehow to IE 6.0.

Re: Reducing excessive font size (IE 6.0 on XP Home)

On loading a Random MSKB page in my IE6 I find the following CSS files:

    default.css
    KBArticleV2.css
    SearchUI.css (for " MS.Support.GSFx.Web.SearchUI ")
    webparts.css (for "MS.Support.GSFx.Web.BannerBar")

    I see no .xml files.

However, isn't the whole point of clicking the Accessibility Options to OVERRIDE the web pages' .css files?? So, if overriding the CSS files does not work, I am not sure deleting them will be any more successful. Regardless, I have no good answer for this problem. How about repairing IE??

How does one "repair" IE 6.0 without having to reinstall the whole XP?

There are some ways to try. My first choice is always SFC or System File Checker which is part of the Windows File Protection system. This will lead you to a number of links I've posted on running SFC--quick and easy no downside and then more extensive repairs for IE including some regedits, ect:

If you go to Control Panel/Add_Remove/scroll to Microsoft Internet Explorer & then click the Add/Remove button, a dialog box will pop up giving you a repair option.
    Hope this helps,

    Phil--

Unfortunately, in XP you don't have that option. That option was left with Win 9X and the last OS to have it was ME--I don't think any of the NT kernel series OS's have it. But I know XP does not.
