Unable to open attachments (Outlook 2000)

I am unable to open some attachments. The attachments are NOT blocked and are visible on the messages. I remember there being an ambigious check box some where that blocks opening attachments but cannot remember where to find it. Any help??? Thanks!

What types of attachments and what is happening when you try to open one of them?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Along the same lines as Dave, do you have the particular file extensions associated with the appropriate software?

What happens when you try to open any of these file type? Do you get a message if so what did it say?

Can you open these files types of file when they are on your hard drive?

What programs are you using to open these files?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Along the lines of Granville's reply, make sure that you have the right file name/extension on the attachment.

Try saving the attachment first, and while you are saving it to disk, check the name of what is being saved, it might look something like this:

    This is a Word Document<font color=blue>.doc</font color=blue><font color=red>.x@>nn{f)w+ieuhp74-2098mc 26%</font color=red>.

Some of these characters are not allowed in file names, but I wanted to give you an example. There is an extra extension that is added for some reason by e-mail handelling software, and this might be your problem.

Check it out and report back if this is the case.

Re: Unable to open attachments (Outlook 2000)

If it only happens on larger files, it -could- be the Temporary Internet File space problem which a couple of Loungers explained a while back.

Because certain versions of Outlook use a folder within the TIF folders to store attached files, if you run out of TIF space, files will not open. One thing you could try is to clean out your TIF cache through Internet Explorer, (menus from IE6) Tools | Internet Options, from there you can either enlarge the cache via the Settings dialog, or reduce the Number of Days History.

See <!mskb=249793>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 249793<!/mskb> and <!mskb=296115>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 296115<!/mskb> for a better long term solution; especially the advice "To force Outlook to use a specific folder for temporary files, create or modify the OutlookSecureTempFolder registry value to point to the folder. Note that the path information for the ...". (Fellow Loungers, I have the feeling I'm missing another relevant MSKB, please correct me here if these are the wrong ones.)

BTW, it helps if you specifty the exact product version when you post a question.

John - I think we originally discussed this point in relation to two other MSKB's. In any event, the details you have given here about setting your own OutlookSecureTempFolder apply equally well. HTH
