Database connectivity (2000)

My goal is to connect to an enterprise database , through excel and query the database and generate extracted data from which I can generate pivot charts that I want to post to our intranet and let managers interact with to slice and dice the data. Any lessons learned, words of wisdom or references to good reading on the best ways to accomplish this. My goal will be to create a website on the enterprise intranet with menu items to select types of data. Thanks for your help in advance.

I found this site quite helpful in getting started with the same thing

There are 3 different methods shown for setting up SQL queries in xl to retrieve data from databases

Also you will have to install and initialize 2 addins: MSQuery and ODBC addin
then use the wizard:
Data>>Get ExternalData>>NewDatabaseQuery (or NewWebQuery) as required

This will get the data into xl
From there you can tweak and publish your spreadsheet to your intranet site.
File>>SaveAsWebPage
