    ANOTHER HotSync Problem

New day, same...uh, stuff. Have a user attempting to sync, receives message on Palm(V) "unable to establish connection to desktop...check your setup". Everything is plugged securely in the right places, but the handheld is not even seeing the PC. Any ideas on what the problem may be?

History: this user's PC was "rebuilt" (windows nt and all apps were reinstalled) several weeks ago and this is the first time he's tried to sync. Though this happens all the time and we've never encountered this problem.

make sure com1 is setup and nothing else is using it, also that the palm is set to local connect and that is set to com1

Also make sure HotSync Manager is loaded. I've done that myself, closed it and then tried to sync my Palm. Doesn't work.

    Re: ANOTHER HotSync Problem

I've found my Palm Vx doesn't like to sync everytime, but by stopping and re-starting the HotSync program, it usually clears the problem.

If this hasn't / doesn't work, my suggestion is, if possible, wipe the Palm clean using the reset button on the back, and wipe out the C:Palm(user_folder) -- if it exists.

    Hope this has helped.

    Re: ANOTHER HotSync Problem

i have been having the same problem hotsynching a palm m515 with xp (the "cradle not connecting to pc" message comes up on the palm). i bought a new cradle, and that worked consistently for about a month, but now it's not hotsynching again. i checked the setup and stopped and restarted the hotsynch program, and neither of those worked. i'm a little squeamish about wiping the palm clean--is there anything else i can try before that? thanks!

Try following these instructions in the Palm Knowledge library to test your cradle first. Post back with your results.

Dammit, I hate it when I don't read the fine print. Either the program exists in XP or not, so there's no harm I can foresee (all waivers and disclaimers of responsibility given). Also, is this a serial port or USB cradle? If USB, can you try another port and see if that works? Does the port work with other USB devices?

    Re: ANOTHER HotSync Problem

the cradle doesn't work with any of the usb ports on that computer, but it works with 2 other computers with different palms. we had someone come out yesterday to look at everything, and she thinks it may just be the actual palm that is broken (either the configuration or the connection hardware.) i'm planning on doing a hard reset to see if it's the configuration, and if it's not, i guess i'll pester palm for a new palm pilot. thanks for your help, though, and definitely let me know if you have any other ideas!

Hmm, thinking through the permutations, you mentioned that "the cradle ... works with 2 other computers with different palms"; does it work with your Palm on those other machines, and do the other Palms work on your cradle and your machine?

    Re: ANOTHER HotSync Problem

i didn't want to test another palm on my computer because we've had problems with multiple palms on one computer before, but i tested the palm in question on another machine, and that didn't work either. i did the hard reset, and that didn't help. i think it may just be a faulty palm, or do you think it could be something else?
    thanks,

Faulty Palm or specifically a faulty sync port in the Palm would be my conclusion.

    Re: ANOTHER HotSync Problem

Try using a pencil eraser (gently) on the contacts on both the cradle and the palm. This has helped me in the past with "problem" palms.

    Re: ANOTHER HotSync Problem

I know this is a very late reply, but it sounds like you might have SUDS (Suddenly USB Doesn't Sync), it's a known issue on the palm 500 series (including 505's and 515's).

    Re: ANOTHER HotSync Problem

    Drew,

In searching this forum I found your reply to another poster who is having the same problem I am having with my M515, it all of a sudden won't synch. You mention the SUDS issue and that it is a known problem. Could you explain this to me and let me know if there is a fix. So far, all the suggestions from Palm have been fruitless. They're now wanting me to call Tech. Support and have also suggested putting the handheld into Debug Mode which will erase all my data. No problem in doing so EXCEPT if it does not work, and I still cannot synch, I lose the use of my handheld until/unless the issue is resolved who knows when.
