Outlook Startup - very slow (2002/xp)

Would appreciate any ideas as to why Outlook suddenly start taking 30 - 40 seconds to start. It used to take 1-2 seconds. I did add 2 rules, and about 10 folders for storing emails, but that is it. Could changing settings or add 2 rules change the startup time? What should I review/change to get Outlook to start fast the way it used to. Thanks.

I've noticed that a COM Add-in will drastically slow start-up time, but I haven't really detected any other patterns. I don't let Outlook check mail automatically, so I would think my startup is about as fast as it gets.

Question: are the folders in your main PST (under the Outlook Today folder in the Folder List) or are they separate PST files? Separate files, I would think, might take longer to open.

I don't know what a COM add in is - this is a standard Outlook as far as I know.

There is only 1 PST - the folders are under the Inbox.

A COM Add-in is a program specially compiled to "plug in" to an Office program. If you drill down to Tools>Options>Other>Advanced you will see a button for COM Add-ins. Anything in the dialog??

I believe I found the answer to this problem. When I change the startup "folder" from Outlook today to Inbox - the startup is fast. On my friend's system it seemed it was also necessary to turn of instant messaging.
