Hell Froze Over: Itunes through a Window One Store

    Hell Froze Over!

    New itunes Welcomes Windows

    Apple Launches iTunes for Windows

    Rhapsody from Real Networks

    The Cat is Back!--Roxio Napster

[/b]"I Tunes for Windows is probably the best app written for Windows."[/b]

    --Steve Jobs October 16, 2003

Itunes for Windows offers a product for Macs and PC's in one store. It'll be interesting to compare Napster remade, and Rhapsody and the other delivery media of music and soon video content over the web pluses and minuses.

It's one thing to create a killer app to sell Macintoshes. It's another to ignore 90% of potential MP3 buyers. The Mac-only-first strategy seems to be a pattern now (first the iPod, then iTunes). I can hardly wait for OSX for Windows. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

You don't have long to wait--it could be that OS X Panther released at 8PM October 24 is the precursor of Longhorn and that Unix security is the precursor of 'Springboard.' and its "new memory code for defeating common buffer overrun attacks."

<img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>If iTunes works even half as well on a PC as on a Mac it will be a winner. It is a great program for managing your mp3 files and the ability to upload to iPods, and buy legal music files from Apple (if you live in the USA) are real bonuses <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

Been there (and back - have the photo under the sign and the stamp in the passport to prove it). Wasn't frozen over at the time, but apparently it becomes so regularly.

Well I'll be d***ed yet another Hell. I've been there too but it was on this side of the pond http://www.hell2u.com/index.php . In fact, it's a running joke in my home town of Windsor, Ontario when the local temp rises high enough the weatherman will report, "It's hotter than Hell in Windsor today".

If there are a few bugs, it's early and the iPod and iMusic have been highly profitable for Apple. iTunes is too profitable for Apple not to be all over any bugs or crashes.

Actually from what I have read Apple isn't making a profit from selling music, but they are hoping to sell more iPods by giving away iTunes, and loosing a little selling the music. The bugs appear to be a hang (for some Win2000 users) on reboot. A lot of complaints that MS Music files arn't supported but as Lonnie says ... DUH!

That's true --they aren't actually making profit from iTunes yet--but they're close and I think they will. Soon there will be comparison charts of the features of the several competitiors with iMusic and the pros and cons of each. Nielsen Sound Scan reports 70% of legal music downloads are iMusic. Apple just reported $44 million the last quarter on Macs and 336,000 ipods but they may be on the wane in sales to schools at least in the U.S. and Windows machines and software may be on the increase there so they closed with their stock price down last week.

In addition to Real Networks' Rhapsody, and Roxio Napster linked above, there are Music Match Downloads discussed Musicmatch Introduces 99 Cent Downloads for the PC here and Music Match Ups Ante for PC User here and BuyMusic.com is asking you to Get Loaded! so the shake-out will get a number of music stores on computers.

I'm not sure there will be a shake-out... probably no one service can get the entire catalog due to "strategic relationships" with different labels. Thus, it is very likely that we will always need more than one "store"...

I went to Apple's website and the specifications said Windows 2000 or XP. Does anyone know if this will work in Windows 98SE ?

Re: Hell Froze Over: Itunes through a Window One Store

I'm sure that will happen--that there will be several to choose from. Some with not as much resource staying power who can't negotiate some of the larger contracts may have a hard time though. So far Real Networks' Rhapsody, and Music Match have more restrictions and tie-ins to more expensive monthly subscription fees and more stringent rights control than iMusic and Apple has gotten more numbers--something like over 10 million legal downloads on the Apple platform--(a small percent of the pre-Windows market requiring Mac OS 10.2 and iTunes 4x).

Windows iMusic is using AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) with DRM required by the recording industry, does support MP3, and right now there is only one portable audio player that supports it and that's the relatively expensive iPod. A lot of people are saying and testing that despite its reputation for high quality, they can't tell the difference from AAC and WMA 9 which is supported by all protable devices. So I'm a little suprised that if Jobs and Apple were going to go Windows and really freeze hell over, they didn't decide to use the much more widely used WMA format.

I'm sure that the contracts might have pushed AAC, but it seems a little short sighted since about 95% of the potential market uses Windows. BuyMusic.com has the WMA format, but it's hamstrung by limitations that forbid the use of the song on more than one PC. This I betcha will change fast when it dawns on them and others that their potential base is shunning them because of this.

Music Match has a simple interface like iMusic, plenty of artist/song info, 99 cent songs and $9.99 albums, with no subscription fee You can also copy to 3 PC's like iMusic, use any portable device(its WMA), and burn to a CD.

Dell and its penchant for coming out of the box with cut prices, and Roxio Napster are coming soon.

Re: Hell Froze Over: Itunes through a Window One Store

Good question--I couldn't even find any OS info on the site. I don't know the percent of 98 Windows machines, but it's got to be high right now and besides passing up 40 potential portable players that'd be another significant mistake Apple had made. Usually the mantra is Microsoft locks people into things. You might try some of the newsgroups or Beta sites--I'll look around as well. If you can call the Apple store they may be able to tell you at 1-800-My-Apple or perhaps a local Apple store can tell you straight up.

Re: Hell Froze Over: Itunes through a Window One Store

On the download page it clearly says Windows 2000 or XP.

My experience with Apple is that they support the latest 'major' revision of their operating system, with maybe downward compatability for one previous OS. The latest update of iTunes (4.1) is recommended for OS X.1.5 or later, we are at X.2.8 at the moment (and obviously it will work with X.3 - panther, due out in less than a week) Previous versions of iTunes (I think) up to 3.x, were usable with OS 9.2 (and some previous). These versions are still available for download from Apple support.

With a new entry into the PC market they seem to be continuing with their policy. i.e. available for the last two major version of PC OSs. I'm sure somebody will try it with other versions, and may be successful, with or without a patch. (I don't know enough about the PC OSs to know what the differences are - there could be some key routines not available in older versions).

While it may be a tactical mistake for Apple not to go for the largest possible market, however if they can capture even a small proportion of 2000/XP users they will dramatically increase their customer base. Only time will tell ...

I don't think Apple wants the whole market, just a fair share. If they wanted the whole thing they would have supported MS music formats. I've seen some wishful thinking on this, but I don't think they will change their mind on this one.
