    Peaceful Coexistence (2000 & XP) (2000/XP)

Can Office 2000 and Office XP coexist without major problems? Is there anything special I need to do when installing XP (2000 is already installed).

    TIA,
    Candi

You should have no major problems. It is important that
    - Office XP is installed later than Office 2000; you're OK there.
    - Office XP is installed in a different folder than Office 2000; by default, Office 2000 is installed in C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice, and Office XP in C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice10, so if you keep to the default location, that should be OK too.

The original question was about installing Office 2000 and Office 2002 on one PC. Installing a beta version of Office 2003, then the final version of Office 2003 is a completely different situation. I would follow Woody's (and others') advice there; I have nothing to add to that, I'm not an early adopter.

I would appreciate some help with understanding three situations:

Question #1: What's the Best Way to Install Beta Office 2003 When Office XP Professional Is Already On the Machine?

When someone installs a Beta Office 2003 (and I understand this could vary with versions used) and has Office XP the brunt of conventional wisdom from veterans is you could install them on the same hard drive, different partition --but in the best conditions or practices you should install them on a different hard drive if possible. Several Word MVP's have said on NG's they have put them on the same hard drive without difficulty--would a diifferent folder be a key to insulate you from conflict problems with Beta 2003 and Office XP?

Office 2003 Beta on the Machine and Office 2003 Final Ready to Install--Anyway to Overcome the common dll problem and retain One Note and Infopath Betas since there are minimal changes discernable in the final version?

Woody's WO2003 (Very Clear Advice) for Installing Office 2003 in This: 6 October 2003 - Vol 1 No.8 and several other people's advice on the situation with Office 2003 Beta Installed already and installing Office 2003 is to make sure to uninstall the Beta first because of a common core of dlls that would cause a conflict if these two were to coexist on the same machine. So here I assume, because of that, putting them in a different folder would not overcome that common dll problem. Is there any way you could get away with this?

This has some implications as Woody points out with respect to Front Page, Publisher and One Note because unlike past version installers Office 2003 installer recognizes beta software and is supposed to uninstall it before putting the final version on your machine.

Could you help yourself with the Office 2003 Beta install and Office XP in by using a different folder same partition?----different partition same hard drive? or different hard drive on the same compu ter?

I'm trying to understand the value of the different folder and the way it protects against conflict. Because of the similar dll pool Woody pointed out, I have the idea you will not be able to insulate yourself from conflict with Office 2003 Beta and Office 2003 Final because of course different folders wouldn't overcome dipping from the same .dll "pool."

Office 2000 on Machine First and Installing Office XP or Office XP on Machine First and Installing Office 2003

If you have Office XP Pro on your machine with one hard drive and four partitions, and you're going to install Office 2003 Final, and I'm concerned about Outlook also here and OE and will explain.

Although OE is a component of IE, as has been explained OE and Outlook have some commonality and potential interaction. Still confused that you can only have one Outlook, so what's best way to handle Office XP on and Office 2003 coming. Different folder? Uninstall Office XP? If there is Outlook mail and say are many Outlook Calendar settings already done in Outlook 2002? Because if you installed Office 2003 to a different folder how would the two Outlooks work out?

    Thanks,

    SMBP

    Re: Peaceful Coexistence (2000 & XP) (2000/XP)

There are several questions involving situations installing Office 2003 with different versions of Office including a Beta already on that machine. I edited them to be clearly understood. They come up every day, because I have seen them asked with less than satisfactory answers on a number of newsgroups. I was hoping to get some here--that's why they were asked.
