    Uninstalling Win2K

I bought the wrong WinXP upgrade (XP home won't upgrade 2K Pro (why??)) and as the seal is broken, the retailer won't take it back.
However, I do still have an old Win98 disc which I can upgrade from.

So, how do I uninstall Win2K completely so that I can install Win98 and upgrade to XP?

To install Win98 over Win2K, backup your data and reformat the partition on your hard drive. WinXP Home was specifically designed as an upgrade for Win9x.

It's the "reformat the partition" bit I have the problem with. How do I do this ? I know what it means but Win 2K doesn't seem to let you boot to DOS so I'm going round in circles. I've downloaded boot discs from the Internet but they load before the HDD so don't see C: and thus can't reformat it.

This should help Here When you get to the site you will see to your left " Technical Assistance" Under that click on "Windows 98" and then "Installing Windows 98" and then click on Step By Step Instructions

If your c drive is of the NTFS format, you will need to use the fdisk command to change the files system type.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: Uninstalling Win2K

The easiest way to do this will be to create a Windows 98 Startup Floppy and boot that.
You can then FDISK, Format and Install Windows 98.
Please check that you can read your Windows 98 CD from the booted floppy before you do the FDISK

If you don't already have a Windows 98 installation, or a ready built Windows 98 Startup Floppy then you may be reduced to asking friends and colleagues to make one for you.

    Stuart,
If the purpose is to get XPH installed you don't have to install Win98. After the format, just start the XP install it will as for a CD as proof of upgradeability.
