Tables & Page Layut View (Word 97 WR 2)

    (Sorry, SR 2)

    Afternoon -

When editing table lines, is there a way NOT to go to Page Layout View?

I may have a schizophrenic computer: sometimes I can apply, for instance, "No Border" without being kicked to Page Layout View, other times I get the Switch to message. What governs this and is there a way to override it?

    Thank you.

I hardly ever see that message so I can't remember the exact wording... the only time I remember getting it consistently was when I was in Normal view and inserted a Frame. Is your table "inline" or in a Frame or TextBox? Is there something in the Borders and Shading dialog that could be inserting a Frame??

    Hi-

Thanks for responding. No, no Frames; no Textbox. Nothing in Borders/Shading that inserts a Frame.

    Anywhere else to look?

    Appreciate your time. ACM

I don't recall when the Tables & Borders toolbar with the pencil, eraser, etc. was developed. If I attempt to use the pencil, eraser, or border color tool, the layout switches to Print Layout (I'm using Word 2000). Also, if I click the Borders tearoff toolbar (the floating one) to change borders, I can stay in normal view. If I click the dropdown line style button:
-- If I select the cell first, the line style is applied in normal view.
-- If the cursor is merely within a cell, I am switched to Print Layout view & the pencil tool is selected.

On the other hand, the line weight & color buttons always switch me to Print Layout. As far as what governs this, once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far away....someone at Microsoft... <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Phil -

    Thanks for responding.

I've been experimenting with first selecting a cell/row and then applying or deleting borders vs. having cursor within a cell and then applying/deleting. And, on my computer, it doesn't seem to make a difference. I am still sometimes asked if I want to be in Pg Layout View.

I have discovered that, sometimes, if I click No and then try to apply a border, it will 'take' in Normal view????

    Ah, sweet mystery of MS.
