PAINT.EXE Lost Its Ability to Save as JPG

My copy of Paint.exe has lost its ability to save as image as a JPG file. I copied a version of Paint from a Win 98 machine, where it saves as JPG just find, to this ME machine. That older version of Paint ran just fine but it too would not save as JPG. Any suggestions?

Perhaps MSKB article You May Be Unable to Save .jpg Files with Microsoft Paint After You Install Office 2000 SR1 or SP2 will help; if not, follow the links near the end of the article. Cannot View Files Other Than Bitmaps in Microsoft Paint may also be relevant.

Thanks, that site had the information needed to fix the problem.

The instructions about having the filters was wrong for ME, it only had all the filters in one subdirectory, the one mentioned in the web site as off of Windows did not even exist. But, the following worked just fine and corrected the problem.

    Thanks

If you already have the JPEG Graphics Filter on your system (and in both locations as stated above), but MS Paint still won't let you "Save As" JPG, you can manually edit the Registry to correct this. It's a simple fix. Go to Start, Run, type REGEDIT, and click OK. Go to this key by clicking the + signs beside the keys (folders):

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftShared ToolsGraphics FiltersExportJPEG.

Click on the "JPEG" key (folder) in the left pane, and you'll see a String Value in the right pane with the name "Extensions". Make sure under the "Data" column it shows only "jpg". If it shows "jpg, jpeg", double-click on the "Extensions" string and from the "Value data" field remove "jpeg" so that it only reads "jpg" (without the quotes).

I've also heard that if you simply open a .jpg or.gif in Paint that it will then save in those formats. I don't use Paint very often and have always had another graphics program like Paint Shop Pro & Irfanview loaded on my systems (and I would suppose all the necessary filters came with them as well), but remember trying this trick when I first heard about it and it did work as advertised. <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>

These might also help someone with fixing Paint, and thanks for the nice link from your great stash of nice links Lonnie:

Internet Explorer Does Not Save Graphics Files in the Proper Format

From Kelly's XP Troubleshooting Top 10 FAQ's: (Many Reg Keys and Fixes on the XP site will Work in ME)

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.jpeg For content Type, it should read: image/jpeg.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.gif For Content Type is should read image/gif.

Also installing the correct graphics filters from another program will make them available for Paint:

251351: Cannot View Files Other Than Bitmaps in Microsoft Paint

NOTE: If you are using AOL: This behavior may occur when AOL's graphic compression option is turned on. When this option is on, the images are saved as the .art file type.

I had heard that too and I tried it but it did not work. I opened the JPG just fine but it would not save it back as JPG.

    Hey Ronny,

It must be the filters, like everyone else has been saying. <img src=/S/bingo.gif border=0 alt=bingo width=15 height=22> If I were you, I'd download and install IrfanView. It's <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>, relatively small, and has several other useful features that you might want to take advantage of. The only caveat would be when installing the program be cautious what file types you associate with the program. I'd advise not associating any programs with it on installation and then selectively associate programs as you find the need or desire to do so. HTH.

    Hi Ronny

My WindowsME version of Paint will only open jpg and bmp files, but it will "Save As" back in either format. (See the image below).

FYI I just posted links for some of my favorite graphics programs, some are Free, in Pix Place.

    Have a Great day!!!
