'Send to' mail as attachment (WinXP/OXP)

I have just had to rebuild my machine after a catastrophic crash, including clean installs of Windows XP and Office XP, and I have just realised that the option to 'Send to' mail recipient as attachment doesn't seem to be there anymore! ('Send to' mail recipient is still there, but that seems to do weird things to the document and is not suitable for my requirement)

Could someone tell me if this true, or if it's just a blip in my installation?

Before the crash I had WinXP and OXP as upgrade installations, and I'm sure that option was there then - I use it quite frequently and it will be a flippin' nuisance if it's not there any more!

    Select Tools | Options...
    Activate the General tab.
Make sure that the "Mail as attachment" option is checked.
This should cause the File | Send To | Mail Recipient (as Text) menu option to change to ... | Mail Recipient (as Attachment).

Hans, you're a lifesaver! Needless to say this is on my home machine and I'm at work at the moment, but I'll do as you say as soon as I get home!

Do you have an item "Mail Recipient (as Text)" in the File | Send To submenu instead of "Mail Recipient (as Attachment)"?
If not, try this (or try it anyway):
    - Select Tools | Customize...
    - Activate the Commands tab of the Customize dialog.
    - Select File in the Categories list.
    - Scroll down the Commands list until you see Mail Recipient (as Attachment).
    - Drag this item to the File menu, wait until the menu drops down, then drag the item to the Send To submenu, wait until that folds out, then drop the item on the submenu.
    - Close the Customize dialog.

    Hi Beryl:
In the event that you still have trouble, I can think of two things (although I don't have XP so I'm out of my depth):
    1. You must have a MAPI compliant email program & make sure this is set up correctly.
    2. If the "option" isn't taking, you may have a corrupt Data key. See the last step in <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>.

I can't think of anything else.

    Hi, Hans.

    (1) Actually, I just have one entry - 'Mail Recipient' - no 'as text' or 'as attachment' or anything else - just those two words.

    (2) I use Outlook Express, which as far as I know is configured correctly and working perfectly.

    (3) I tried your excellent suggestion, and I now have 'Mail Recipient (as attachment)' - great! - only trouble is, it's greyed out and stays that way no matter what the status of the document is (saved/unsaved etc).

Re: 'Send to' mail as attachment (WinXP/OXP)

Hi Phil, thanks for the suggestions - as I just noted in my reply to Hans, I use OE and as far as I am aware it's set up properly and working fine, so the MAPI compliant bit shouldn't be a problem.

I tried the other idea, deleting the registry key and letting Word recreate it, and it worked perfectly as far as the registry is concerned - but the situation didn't change regarding Mailing as an attachment!

Hans, I don't believe this, but I did as you said - and it was already checked. So, knowing what M$ is like, I unchecked it and accepted this, then went back in and checked it again ... and the item still won't appear on my menu, even when I closed Word inbetween eachoperation.
    <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>
This seems so obviously the right thing to do to make it available I can't believe there's something else, but on the very slim chance there could be, do you have any further ideas?
    <img src=/S/please.gif border=0 alt=please width=31 height=23>??
It's not an insuperable problem, of course - I can always go to Windows Explorer and use Send To from there, but it's just so irritating to lose a really useful function like this!

    Anyway, thanks for your help. <img src=/S/thankyou.gif border=0 alt=thankyou width=40 height=15>

Re: 'Send to' mail as attachment (WinXP/OXP)

    Hi Beryl:
I found a couple of articles, but I don't know if they will help.
OLEXP: File, Send To, Mail Recipient, or Mail Recipient (as Attachment) Missing
HOW TO: Send a Word Document as E-mail in Word 2002

Finally, if those don't help, there are a number of articles I found in a Google search, although none seemed as appropriate as the first two. The search is here
    Hope this helps,
