    Mozilla Prefs Hijack (Mozilla 1.4)

    A few days ago my son and (almost) three year old grandson were here and used my computer for awhile. One of the places my grandson likes to go is sites that feature the "Bob The Builder" children's character. Later that day I discovered that I was having trouble with the cursor keys and the page up/down keys not working as they should. I initially thought that the batteries in my cordless KB were going, so I replaced them first, with no luck. To make a long story short, I eventually found that somehow, the following two lines had gotten added to my Prefs.JS file:

    user_pref("accessibility.browsewithcaret", true);
    user_pref("accessibility.warn_on_browsewithcaret", false);

    This resulted in a word processing-like vertical cursor bar appearing in web pages where one should not have been appearing. There should be NO blinking cursor bar in the middle of an HTML page! Evidently one of those pages they visited had made this change, for when I removed the two "offending" lines in Prefs, the problem went away.

    Just thought someone would want to know. Just one more reason for making DAILY backup copies of selected critical files!

    You could try setting your prefs.js file to Read Only before you next let your grandson onto your machine. That way, he shouldn't be able to change any of your defaults. Just don't forget you'll need to change it back after he goes!!

    Sounds like he's old enough for his own computer. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

    Nah, don't think so. Whenever either my son or I "let him" play, we do all the mousing and clicking. Billy just tells us what colors, how to do the puzzle, where to put the tools, etc. So, the fact that one of the sites MADE changes to the browser was evidently not "announced," it just happened. The reason for the post was just so other Moz users could be alert for the need to BACKUP that ol' Prefs file, frequently. Here's two examples of the suspected sites, so be careful if you click past the opening page (it's safe):

    BTW, if you do think of going the "Read Only" route, you'll need to reset BOTH prefs.js and prefs.bak.

    You might like to press for a "Protect Prefs.js" option in the Options Panel on the Mozilla Features board. Price of membership is the same as the Lounge.
