    Uninstalling Norton System Works

    Hey,
I've had to uninstall NSW virus scanner included (old version & upgrading/changing to McAfee). McAfee Security Center won't completely install due to leftover files of Norton. Everytime I reboot my black screen notes me to uninstall or reinstall Norton to repair missing files. I don't want to reinstall it. Can anyone give some advise? Thanks very much.

    Sauble,

Check out your startup files. Go to start>run> type msconfig, click startup tab. Look for a file named navapw32. Disable it and any other NAV files mentioned.
If you really want to clean out things, go to regedit and search for "Norton anti virus" and delete any references to it.

Are you keeping the rest of Norton Systemworks in your system? If so, be careful that you only delete NAV type references.

    (why you would want to change to McAfee, is another question) <img src=/S/2cents.gif border=0 alt=2cents width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/yikes.gif border=0 alt=yikes width=15 height=15>

Tell me which version of NSW and I can pull some instructions that might help from their site/KB's. What year and is it standard or pro?

    Re: Uninstalling Norton System Works

I'm using NSW 2002 & NIS 2002. Once the laptop and pc were networked with DLink + firewall, Norton's kept screwing up the connections. PC is 98se/laptop xp pro. Tried to uninstall through control panel but it left residual files and just needed an anti virus on machines. Downloaded McAfee as per our business tech suggested, but wouldn't completely install on PC because of NSW files leftover. Yesterday I left both machines working fine sending & receiving and were turned off at night. On arrival this aft...more issues; once turned on No MS Outlook being received on PC & no in or out mail on laptop which still has McA on it. After talking with our tech I uninstalled McA (completely)- reinstalled NSW & NIS 2002 on PC. But both can surf fine on INET. Laptop can't print as networked either. Seems either I've messed with network connection or anti virus has issues. FYI- Both machines have been scanned 100% for virus'. FYI: prior to uninstalling NIS...I needed to disable firewall and could receive or send mail from Outlook. This trick won't work at present configuration.
Now what...our tech is stuck in the Sea to Sky Flood & I'm winging it.

    Any help would be great!
    Thanks,
    Sauble

    Hey Viking and SMBP,
Just want to tell you...I give up...I've trying uninstalling, manual and control panel...but still have issues. I've re-installed the NSW to appease the problem and will work around it. Once our tech installs OS XP...well that should take care of it for good. I really appreciate you assistance.

    Sauble--

Not sure what's going on right now--after reinstall of Norton--assume still the same. Are you getting any error messages at any time--can you see any when you put "eventvwr.msc" without quotes in the runbox?

While you don't have System Restore in 98 SE you do have "scanreg /restore" which you can type in the run box, which sometimes works as well if not better--why not give it a shot if any of your five default restore points are prior to the install or Norton? I understand they may not be.

Had similar experiences and had to delete registry keys that went on forever it seemed following some of the Symantec KB's.

I want to link you to some of the NSW Uninstall KB's you can take a look at:

How to uninstall Norton SystemWorks manually

How To Uninstall NSW 2002, 2003, or 2004

How to uninstall Norton AntiVirus by using the Rnav2003.exe removal utility

How to uninstall individual components from Norton SystemWorks 2002 or 2003

Further Uninstall NSW KB's Symantec Site
