    Tables - down arrow (Word97 Sr-2)

    Again, Good Evening -

When a column is right-aligned and I hit the down arrow, why is it that I am taken to the column to the right, rather than the cell directly below the one I was typing in? Hope my question is clear.

    Thanks,
    Curious

    Hi Curious:
You should go to the line below. If you have only 1 line in a cell, it should go 1 cell down. Try converting the table to text & back to a table again...assuming you have the same number of cells in each row.

    Phil -
Thanks for the response and the promptness!

On a test table where I was having the same problem, I did as you suggested - tabl-to-text-to-table, and it worked. I cannot at this stage 'play around' with the working document (it's about 35 rows, 9 columns, merged cells in the header, etc., etc.).

Is there any rime/reason as to why I was/am having this problem?

    Thanks for the insight.

If you merged any cells horizontally, Word's concept of which is the corresponding cell in a different row can be difficult to guess. I've discovered over time that merging cells in a "working" table leads to all sort of alignment problems and occasional corruption. If you want to merge cells to, say, center a heading over two columns just before finalizing and printing, I think that's reasonably safe. Otherwise, I suggest not doing it. If you absolutely need to create the appearance of merged cells, you can create separate tables (even if they are only one or a few rows) and separate them with a paragraph formatted as hidden text (e.g., This line is hidden!). The tables will print as though they were all one, but each will have perfect integrity. Harder to explain than to do. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Jefferson -

I thank you, too. Yes, I do usually create separate tables and then create the illusion of one.

I wonder why it is sometimes difficult for the gremlins that run Word to distinguish headers from rows that may be very far away (i.e, 15th row down....). But, I digress.

    Thanks again.

As Jefferson has said, merged cells can cause all sorts of problems. It's even worse in Word 2000, as nested tables, as well as both vertical & horizontal merging make for more complexity. This may be the cause of your cursor jumping when pasting text also, as the result should be the same as copying & pasting a cell or just text (as far as the cursor position).

You can convert portions of your 35 row table to text (the rows that have the same number of cells) & then convert them back to separate tables. I strongly urge you to follow Jefferson's suggestion before you have more problems.
    Cheers,
