No text select w/mouse (Word 2003)

Well, stupid me went out and bought the new release today, and instead of performing a clean install, I upgraded. Everything looks cool in Outlook, but Word will not allow me to select text with the mouse, and when I try to open files, there are files WHICH I KNOW ARE ON THE HARD DRIVE that do not appear in the Word Open File dialogue box.

    Any ideas?

    > Word will not allow me to select text with the mouse

This does not sound like an enhancement. Is it possible that the document is protected (Tools>Unprotect would appear, at least if the menus are similar to earlier versions)? Does it make any difference whether you are in Normal, Print Layout, or Web view?

    > there are files WHICH I KNOW ARE ON THE HARD DRIVE that do not appear in the Word Open File dialogue box

Are these .doc files? Are whole folders not there, or are individual files in a folder missing, or some of each?

No, in any view the mouse simply won't select text. I can select text by moving the cursor to a point and then using the Shift key and arrows, but the mouse just flat won't
work. I tried the Protect Document option, but it is not selected for the document.

Yes these are .doc files. There are individual files that didn't appear yesterday, but appear to be there today. I did reboot, but once you copy a file it should be there in the dialogue box. This is ridiculous. I believe this is just a quirk. I am about to format hard drive and do clean install.

I bought Student and Teacher Edition, and have installed it on two of the allowed three computers. I will check out the other computer later to see if this "feature" is present there as well. Finally, these files that don't appear have been copied from a CD-R, but I went in and changed the properties to omit the "read only" attribute so that can't be a problem there either.

Well, please keep us up to date. I prefer not to install new versions of MS products until the first service pack, so I probably won't be along for the ride until next year.

Re: No text select w/mouse (Word 2003)

Same problem here. Thought it was Object Desktops, WinFX or perhaps WindowsBlinds. Nope. Then thought it might be because I installed MS Publisher (from Office 2000) - nope - uninstalled everything just re-installed Office 2003 - still cannot select text, in fact can't even position the mouse pointer anywhere in a document. Right click doesn't work either. Thought it might be WOPR (which got picked up when I did the 1st install - Upgrade) - it still might be WOPR, so that brought me to this forum. I see there's a new WOPR for 2003. I'm not running that. So I uninstalled everything, installed disk 2 of Office 2000, (need Publisher), and all the uprades. Then installed Office XP - MS Word and the tools only. Then did all the upgrades. Then Installed Office 2003 and selected 'Custom' and kept all the old stuff around. So now everything seems to work except I have WORD XP and WORD 2003 installed. Have to use WORD XP until this mouse thing gets resolved. So add me to the list of 'pioneers' - you know the guys in 1st with the arrows in their backs :-) ... Michael

Re: No text select w/mouse (Word 2003)

Did complete format of hard drive (which is not THAT painful), installing Windows XP and all Service Packs/Patches, then Office 2003. Problems solved. I have not yet exported my Normal.dot file from Word XP and installed that over Word 2003. That is required, and that may break it again, but I will do that later today.

By the way, I started to buy WOPR 2003 from this site for $25 when I got my email from Woody advising I can get his book AND WOPR 2003 for $5 more ($30). What a deal. I was going to buy WOPR anyway. It is the only reason I don't completely switch platforms to OSX. I love my Powerbook, but use my PC (and WOPR) too much to relearn how to do things in OSX.

And further by the way, Outlook 2003 is pretty cool. Makes these upgrade problems seem almost tolerable. Okay, not tolerable, but at least it is a light at end of tunnel.

A little too drastic for me Byron, although I have done such things in the past. Since you and I both had the same problem the 1st day of this product being available, I suspect there will be many many more. I'll wait for a fix. ...Michael (However, that being said, and knowing my impatience, let's hope the fix comes soon :-) )

Re: No text select w/mouse (Word 2003)

Ok, as I suspected in my previous appends, it's WOPR who/that caused this problem. Here in the far north (Canada) I haven't been able to get Woody's latest book yet and thus the new version of WOPR (I want the book, not just the software). When I disable the XP version, by removing it from OFFICE11STARTUP this problem went away. I'm sure Woody has an explanation. :-) What I did learn is that the Microsoft Office Word Support Template is a really neat tool. You can disable all kinds of stuff, from registry entries to add-ins. Found out that there was one for Word 2002 too, but of course won't need that. Anyway, I'll start using Word 2003 now. Interesting no hiccups in the other Office 2003 apps because of WOPR - Excel, for example. However, I'm going to pull WOPR from there too. Perhaps someone can put a warning out about older versions of WOPR not being 'upwardly compatible'. ... Michael

Re: No text select w/mouse (Word 2003)

Final (perhaps) comment on this bug. Woody pointed me to the fact that one should 'uninstall' WOPR before installing Office 2003 by going to Control Panel/Add Remove Programs (See his post in Other Serious Stuff/Office Peer-to-Peer/WOPR XP and Office 2003.) When I got there I was reminded that I also had Mike Craven's Places Bar as well as his Thesauras installed. Oops, they had to go too! (Waiting now for his 2003 versions). Now that all three of my Office add-ins are gone, Word 2003 is behaving like it's supposed to. Oh, and of course if like me you didn't un-install WOPR prior to installing Office 2003, you can certainly do it afterwards. The only glitch for me (perhaps because I still have Word XP installed) is that you have to clean up by going to Programs FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice11Startup and remove the add-ins. The normal uninstall process only removed the stuff from the Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice10Startup folder.

Thanks for posting the resolution, Michael. I'm sure it will be helpful as more people install Word 2003. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
