    Outlook 2003 Newsgroups (11.5608.5606)

Any ideas on how to get newsgroups as part of the personal folders group. Have tried to follow the help screen but run into problems after selecting Add/Remove Customise then GO from Categories Tab then in Command Tab Newsgroups is suppose to be here. But guess what? It is not ! Interestingly there are to Internet Call fields one with a sub categort contaivnig another Internet Call tab. But alas no newsgroups. Failing this is there an easy way to set up and import newsgroups similar to Outlook Express. Thanks Glen Reed

Does the attached help? BTW clicking on the tab in Outlook opens up Outlook Express - which is where you actually have to configure the Newsgroups.

You may have to go back to your Office 2003 CD. I did a total install, and maybe this is a feature that doesn't come with the default setup.

FWIW, newsgroups aren't really in Outlook - just a shortcut to OE with the /outnews switch. There is a problem reported by some users where News missing from the customize dialog. I believe you need to delete outcmd.dat and restart outlook to get it back.

Create a desktop shortcut (or copy an existing OE shortcut) and use the following command line:
    msimn.exe /outnews

The total reinstall did nothing to resolve the problem, but thanks anyway.

Thanks for your help. I guess I am one of those users where News is missing from the customise dialog. Interesting those I searched the hard drive for outcmd.dat and did not find it and all files are visible.

outcmd.dat is normally in Cocuments and Settings[username]Application DataMicrosoftOutlook - which is a hidden folder. It usually is created when you do any customising to any of the Outlook toolbars. Make sure you have "show hidden files and folders" checked in Settings|Control Panel|Folder Options.

    Re: Outlook 2003 Newsgroups (11.5608.5606)

I checked the folder you suggested and found the file, but before deleting it I checked the folder options and can confirm that show all hidden files was checked so it remains a mystery why my search could not find it. Back to the problem yes I deleted it and then opened Outlook and still no News via the customise tab. Checking that theoutcmd file was not in the folder I did a reboot to see if that activated the News, it didn't but it did reactivate outcmd where to from here?
    Thanks

    Re: Outlook 2003 Newsgroups (11.5608.5606)

I have the same problem; deleting outcmd.dat didn't sort it out. I replaced it with my previous version of that file--News doesn't always show up but if I click on the Home Page icon on the Web toolbar, then got to the Inbox, then click on the Go menu, then News is there. But when I click on it, it doesn't launch OE. Instead it goes to this folder:

    C:Program FilesCommon FilesSYSTEMMSMAPI1033

This is very odd because when I first installed Office 2003 two days ago, it worked fine. Seems like the kind of techonology they would've nailed in Outlook many versions ago--it's not like the way it handles News has changed. Makes you wonder what a heap it must be under the hood.

    Re: Outlook 2003 Newsgroups (11.5608.5606)

Thanks for your imput, In trying to resolve the problem I went back to the Add/Remove link in Control panel Srolled down to Office then Outlook to see if any components were missing, they weren"t as the run all from my computer option was selected. However, I went through every option in Outlook and reselected Run all from my computer and additionally did same to Office Shared Features ans Office Tools. Then went and deleted outcmd.dat and then opened Outlook to my surprise News was where it should be. So I followed the install instructions to place it in the Go menu and it worked fine, I succeeded in downloading Newsgroups. Closed the system down and came back hours later to discover News had escaped and has not been sighted since.

Same here. I think it must be an upgrade issue. Probably not a problem with clean installs or something. Best to just put the shortcut on the desktop.

    Cheers.

    This seems to be a definite case of <img src=/S/bwaaah.gif border=0 alt=bwaaah width=123 height=15>!!

    <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>This may get fixed in the first Service Patch.
