    CD burner problem

I'm using an Imation 16X10X32 CD burner, and I'm relatively inexperienced in using these things. I want to backup some stuff on this computer, but I can't seem to get my backup utility to see the blank disk. The utility tells me to insert a blank CD into the drive

    Re: CD burner problem

    Lucas,

This sounds something like the problem I just had with my burner ( with some exceptions).
First click on MyComputer>right click on the drive that should be your burner>properties.

Is there a recording tab there? If there is, open it and make sure that "CD recording for this drive" is enabled.
Also if this tab is there, it indicates that the system recognizes that the drive as a burner, not just a CD-ROM.

    Re: CD burner problem

Thanks, Bob. Yeah, my computer recognizes the drive as a burner. Fact is, on rare occasions, I've burned one or two. Trouble is, seems like every time I go to do this with no "adult supervision," I hit these snags. Luckily, today my mentor is here to help.

    I appreciate your response! Thanks!

What software are you using for backing up?

    Re: CD burner problem

You didn't say, but from the gist of the messages, I assume your OS is Windows XP, huh? I'm not sure about this, since I don't do so, but I didn't think you can use the WINDOWS backup program to a CD destination. When I looked in Help it says "file" or "tape." Someone care to chime in and say if I'm correct on this? (Through ALL versions of Windows, I've never had much use for its built-in backup and always used third-party software to do the job)

Sorry I forgot to mention that the computer in question runs on Win2000.

    Re: CD burner problem

You are right , Al. NT Backup does NOT have the capability to back up to CD's, nor does it have file compression. Two big features that made it a rather unpopular and lightly used utility.

...and number three being the fact that (I believe) no backup from one Windows operating system was compatible with the backup software from any other.

    Re: CD burner problem

I was able to burn a backup to CD using the backup utility in Windows XP Pro. Might be because I also have Roxio "basic" from Dell? It was quirky. I posted on this around the end of September, but can't find the thread.

Thanks, Leif. Don't know why I couldn't see it in the list.
