Bookmarks are gone (ouch) (Netscape 6.2)

    When I signed on to my ISP this morning, my Bookmarks did not come up <img src=/S/groan.gif border=0 alt=groan width=16 height=15> . Does anyone know where these are kept and how I might get them back? When I called my ISP, they are 30 minutes behind (waiting time of max 30 minutes to answer my call) <img src=/S/groan.gif border=0 alt=groan width=16 height=15> <img src=/S/disappointed.gif border=0 alt=disappointed width=15 height=15> . Any insight that anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks <img src=/S/thankyou.gif border=0 alt=thankyou width=40 height=15> <img src=/S/compute.gif border=0 alt=compute width=40 height=20>

Do a search oin your hard disk for Files or Folders with "bookmark" in the name. (I seem to remember that the name may have changed slightly with differing versions of Netscape.) Make sure that in Settings|Control Panel|Folder Options|View "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. If you are running WinXP, you will also have to make sure that the Search in Hidden Files and Folders option is checked. Hope This Helps

Thanks. "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. I found a large number of files with bookmark in their name. Still cannot get the right one, or any one for that matter, to show up in Netscape.

<UL><LI>Select the most recent "bbokmark" file. <LI>Open it in Netscape. <LI>Provided that that is the right one, choose Ctrl + D. This should add the file to your Netscape Bookmarks. <LI>Close Netscape. Rerun your search for "bookmark". <LI>Choose the most recent file. (THAT should be in your default Bookmarks folder.) <LI>Right-click on the file in the Search Results folder and choose "Open containing folder". <LI>Swap out this file for the one you identified in Step 3 above. (The address will be in the new hyperlink.) <LI>Hopefully, this will have brought back your "real" Bookmarks.[/list]

Re: Bookmarks are gone (ouch) (Netscape 6.2)

unkamunka, one interesting thing I found ...in my Netscape Users folder, there is a Bookmark.html file. It will open seperately in Netscape, but is an old version (1 year+) of the real thing. I cannot even begin to find the one that I had at this time yesterday., even the Search results returned do not show it. Does the system or Netscape hide these things?? The thing I do not know is what path does Netscape use to find the bookmark file? Any insight? Thanks for your help with this. <img src=/S/compute.gif border=0 alt=compute width=40 height=20>

Re: Bookmarks are gone (ouch) (Netscape 6.2)

You are reporting something I expected. That is why I suggested you go through all the rather convoluted steps in order to pinpoint the file/folder which Netscape is now actually defaulting to.

Netscape/Mozilla/Firebird has remained my default browser, but I have somewhat lost track of the various ways in which the default folder is selected for user preferences. On a number of Windows OS's, including XP, the Application Data folder - which is the default choice for bookmarks etc - is hidden. Personally, I use a whole set of separate folders to hold both the applications and the personal settings. This does, of course, mean a bit more trouble in setting up - but makes backing up for any reinstall a lot simpler (as long as you run the "--profile manager" switch when you do so).

The only time I have lost my settings is through carelessness. I hope that is not what has happened to you. It appears, nonetheless, that you have at least found some form of historic backup to work from.

Re: Bookmarks are gone (ouch) (Netscape 6.2)

Well, I found out where Netscape 6.2 keeps its bookmarks. They are buried down inside the Documents and Settings folders. I had a version that I brought with me from a previous job site that has a lot of the original ones, but I still lost a lot. I would not feel so bad, but I do not know how I lost the origianl ones - they just went in the bit bucket, it guess <img src=/S/doh.gif border=0 alt=doh width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/bummer.gif border=0 alt=bummer width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>

I wonder if there is some combination of CTRL or ALT of SHIFT plus a letter that kills the bookmarks, or if I did something to my preferences that killed these. Like when I signed off last night they were there and this morning they are not. Go figure

Thanks for your help and guidance.

Are you sure about that? You said in your earlier post that your search of the hard drive turned up several files with "bookmark" in the name, so isn't it possible that one of them is the file you're looking for? I don't have 6.2 installed anywhere so I can't remember what they (Netscape) "changed" the name to. It's either bookmark or bookmarks and the extension is either .htm OR .html. Netscape ALWAYS (by default) stores its bookmark file in the user profile folder, which you've now said you found. However, it you have a file in there with either the wrong name or the wrong extension, Netscape won't "see" it and instead will create a new file. I'd bet the file you want is still lurking somewhere - you've just got to place it in the right folder..... Well, good luck, one way or the other.

Re: Bookmarks are gone (ouch) (Netscape 6.2)

    Ron,
Two times in one year, I was using Netscape 7.n until ALL my settings, email and bookmarks disappeared. I never figured out why this would happen. I would use NS, close the program, shut off my PC for the day (nothing unusual), then the next day it's like I had just installed Netscape for the first time, even asking me to build a profile. With some detailed and deep digging, I did find most of my stuff, but rather than try to find the cause, I switched browsers.

Unkamunka's idea of putting all the files in one place is probably the safest, if not complicated.

Re: Bookmarks are gone (ouch) (Netscape 6.2)

Between Netscape 4 and Netscape 6, I started running Mozilla. When Netscape 6 came out, I did install it (and later versions) and ran Netscape a while, but each time went back to Mozilla. Same thing with Netscape 7. Because of this backgroumd, I've always stuck with the file structure I mention; partly because I was used to working with it. I now run Mozilla Firebird and Thunderbird - finding both more than satisfactory. AFAIK there is no simple key combination that deletes all bookmarks or an entire profile.

Re: Bookmarks are gone (ouch) (Netscape 6.2)

Netscape can store the bookmarks anywhere you want using any file name you wish. I don't have Netscape anymore but I use to use this feature. You find where your bookmarks are stored, select manage bookmarks on the bookmark menu. You change file/location simply by opening a new bookmark file here. It should open a dialog box that starts in the subdirectory where your current bookmarks are stored. By the way, unless you have changed it, the file name is bookmarks.html not bookmark.html.

Re: Bookmarks are gone (ouch) (Netscape 6.2)

Big Al, I did find a number of files with the name bookmark, but I could tell by the size that they are not the ones that disappeared. I had a lot of book marks. I did open a number of potential candidates to see if they were it (the one I lost), but to no avail. If the old file is on my computer, then it is doing a great job of hiding in plain site as they say. I will go back and check on files with an htm(l) extensions to see if it is hiding elsewhere. Thanks for the encouragement. <img src=/S/compute.gif border=0 alt=compute width=40 height=20>

Just for clarity: I originally suggested that you search for "bookmark" as that would bring up all files named bookmark or bookmarks and .htm and .html.
