Updates

When I first got my computer, 3 1/2 years ago, I was a green newbie. Somewhere along the line, I heard about Windows Updates, but I was afraid to 'mess with' my computer, and never installed any. A couple of months ago, I changed ISP's, and the new one told me to go to Microsoft and install the Win98 Security Patch. When I went to do that, there were several, all with different requirements, and I had no idea which one('s) to install. I've never used the Windows Update feature. Does it make the choices for you, or do you have to figure it all out for yourself? I'm sure there are a lot of holes in my system that need patching, but I have absolutely no idea how to sort through all of them and decide which ones are right for my computer. Help!

    Re: Updates

    Hi Phil

I can't seem to locate the post you mention on the Lurkhere site. Is it in their Windows 98 forum?

I'm in the process of archiving all of the available updates myself, but face the same problems of others - namely, which patches and in which order? Having done a bit of hunting myself, I've come up with a strategy I'd like some feedback on. At the moment I'm using IE 5.00 and have downloaded an "installable" (as opposed to live update) version of IE6 for 98SE. I'm of the opinion that if I update IE to this v6 then a lot of the updates will disappear from the list on the WindowsUpdate site, since they'll already have been effectively installed. Does this sound right?

My other idea was to follow your advice, and actually let the live update do its thing, one fix at a time + reboot, but how easy is it to do the same thing from an archived copy? Most of the patches are single .EXEs, but occassionally they look a bit more ominous. Can anything go wrong? (silly question ).

(Edited by Phil Rabichow on 06-Nov-03 08:49. to correct the link)
When you go to Windows Update, it will run a check on your computer. Then it will list critical updates, recommended updates, & other updates. I would install the critical updates in chronological order, 1 at a time. The recommended updates (& others) are optional & depend upon your preferences.

There was a recent thread on how to actually download the updates to disk so that you would have them in the future. i was going to do this, but have misplaced the instructions. Perhaps someone else can remember the post with those instructions. However, simply allowing Windows Update to install the updates will also work. I would reboot between each update.

Whoops. Just found the instructions. HOW TO_ Archive Updates/Patches from Windows Update"

    I Alan:
I apologize; the link was insufficient. I've corrected it. As far as your questions, if you upgrade to IE 6, I would run the WU after this. The instructions are pretty good, although I haven't done it. It's difficult to figure out which ones you don't need, since they issue cumulative updates. I'm not sure if the "cumulative" updates accumulate since the last cumulative update (in which case you'd need to apply all cumulatives+single ones after that date) or everything up to that date. The safe way is to do it in date order, but maybe if no one else answers, you could post a separate question asking about the order.

I do know that there are patches that are "optional" as they only apply to certain processors, so it gets very confusing.

    Re: Updates

Thanks Phil. Your plan is basically the same as what I had in mind. I have a "personalized" copy of what updates are currently critical/ recommended/ optional for my system. I will install IE6 and repeat the process and compare. I've just managed to download all available updates, so I can now install as needed direct from HD/CD.

Just BTW, there are 4 "dead links" in the 98 Windows Catalog, but somebody managed to get MS support to chase them down and find the valid links. The details are on http://www.keenanconsulting.on.ca/tr...warefinds.html.
