From MSKB article WD: Frequently Asked Questions About the Task Pane:

How Can I Turn Off the Task Pane?

The task pane cannot be turned off (disabled). You can hide the task pane when you do not need it. If you use a feature that requires the task pane, the task pane automatically reopens.

To hide the task pane, do one of the following:
Click the Close button (the X in the upper-right corner of the task pane).
-or-
On the View menu, click Task Pane.

When I first got Office XP, I hated the task panes, but I have grown to like them over time. There are some annoyances, but tell me something new...

The task panes aren't going away anytime soon, so you might as well get used to them.

It depends on which ones... you can restore the previous File>New behavior fairly easily by customizing the File menu. I haven't had quite as good luck with Format>Styles..., the functionality of the old dialog seems to be broken with respect to tabs. The "what's this" help I believe only works with the Task Pane in XP. As for the others... I can't remember.

I do find the Task Panes quite useful in PowerPoint, for what it's worth.

Hiya

I just know the taskpanes will confuse our users.
Thats an idea thanks, I may just customise Words menus.
I'll try it & see how I go.

I havent really used powerpointXP. however if i would prefer to make the apps environments standard & consistant ie if i have task panes on in powerpoint then i may as well have them on in Word etc.

You can get back the old Styles dialog box. Go to Tools/Customize/Commands tab. Select Format in the Categories List. Scroll down the Commands list to the "Style
