Gold.exe won't run under Windows XP (Windows XP SP1)

The Microsoft supplied program "Golf.exe" is a solitaire type game which came out circa Windows 3.1 . I have been copying it to each new Windows release until now, after my transition from Windows Me to XP it no longer runs. I get an error window titled "Can't run 16-bit Windows program" with the message "One of the library files needed to run C:Golf.exe cannot load in the 16-bit Windows subsystem because it is a Win32.DLL." Does anyone know how I can get this program (to which I am addicted) to run in Windows XP?

Golf.exe needs a file named Cards.dll. There is a new version of Cards.dll in Windows XP that is used by FreeCell etc., but Golf can't handle it.

Can you get hold of a copy of the old Cards.dll? If not, get it here. Put it in the folder that contains Golf.exe (NOT in C:WindowsSystem32 where the new version is)

Thank you, thank you. You've saved a PC from not being given to charity. Since you so easily pulled that from your hat, I'll address my second problem with Golf. When the game is over Golf is supposed to display the number of cards remaining. About a year ago it started displayed garbage characters insteatd, not letters and numbers but squiggles. Running it as I just did under XP It displayed nothing at all. The only way I can get it to display the numbers is under Windows Me in Safe mode. It's as iff Golf cannot handle anything but Safe's default screen resolution. Any ideas? John Littell

I don't have Golf myself, so I don't really know, but try the following:
    - Right-click Golf.exe or the shortcut you use to start it.
    - Click Properties in the popup menu.
    - Activate the Compatibility tab.
    - Tick the Compatibility Mode check box, and select Windows 95 from the list.
    - Since Golf is relatively old, tick the four other check boxes.
    - Click OK.
If Golf runs OK now, you might experiment with clearing one or more of the four check boxes to see if the game runs OK without those settings.
If Golf still has problems, you may be out of luck.
