Strange File (WIN XP HOME)

A friend has found a file named DEP.DUS in her MY DOCUMENTS folder. I have scanned it with NAV and it finds nothing. I have done a google search and come up with no meaningful information - most of the few google hits I found are in German. Has anyone run into this file. Part of the stuff I found with Google mentioned the file with a PIF extension - as in DEP.DUS.PIF which makes me very suspicious.

According to newsgroup threads, it is associated with scanner software provided with HP scanners. The .DUS extension is from a program called ReadIris Font Dictionary from Iris.

Let me tell ya what I found. I was searching for DPE.DUS and my antivirus PC-Cillin caught and stoped the "PE_BUGBEAR.B-O Virus" when I clicked on a file that said DPE.DUS.
You can read about it here on PC-Cillins Site Trend Micro
May not have anything to do with the DPE.DUS file, but didn't take me long to find that worm under that file name on the net. If you go to this page CENASIA DISCUSSION down in the middle you will see this file {application/x-msdownload attachmentPE.DUS} DO NOT CLICK ON IT , it is a virus.

You can see my Google search Here and the webb sites that show DPE.DUS.pif

Hey Cowboy,

I've heard that if you go lookin' for trouble, you're likely to find some !!!

I KNOW that you KNOW that any file with 2 extensions is trouble and that one with the second extension .pif is almost always a virus in disguise for those who don't have the "Show All File Extensions" option checked.

I'd first check the file properties to see if that gives any clue to what it is, how large or small & when it was created. Then I'd rename it to something like DPE_bad.DUS and see if anything stops working. If after a week or so of activity on the PC with no problems I'd move it off to a floppy and see if that causes any problems. If not, then it was probably "some strange file" that you can safely delete.
Then after you have deleted it, you will find out what it was and that you Really need it !!

I searched Google and only found one reference to a file like that in another forum. Same senario, just showed up in My Documents one day. There was no reply posted there.

Cowboy, you old rebel you !!!

I guess havin' those full weekly Disk Copy backups gives you the security to play with those types of files without first checkin' them out. I had the same bravado when using GoBack. There was nothin' I wouldn't try (on the computer that is).

Rattlesnake huntin', huh ??? I imagine computer viruses are pretty tame after something like that !!!
