Re: lost product key

I hope someone has a better solution, as I could find no information on where the product key is saved in the registry. I think it's combined with the machine ID. You will probably have to call Microsoft & get a new product ID issued.

Call Microsoft and if you have a legal copy they (MS) should be able to help you out.

If your registry survived the crash, or you have a backup, try looking in

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftOffice9.0Regist rationProductID

In my WindowsME Office2000 setup that is where it is stored.

    Re: lost product key

    Hi Andrew:

I have that key & an entry for Office 2000 on Win98SE too. However, the value for that key matches my Product ID, but not my Product Key (the CD key). My CD key is 25 characters long but my Product ID is only 20 characters. I don't think they are the same thing.

    Re: lost product key

    Phil,

Maybe it is different for OEM versions (which I have), but the number in the registry is the number I used to install the package. I checked an older PC which has Office 97 (OEM), and the same applies.

There does not seem to be any CD Key as such, like there is with the Windows ME CD (which was not OEM, but a retail upgrade) I have. If there is a different CD key, I never got a copy.

    Hi Andrew:

I have an OEM version of Office 2000 & a retail version (Yes, I went out and bought the retail version because I never know what I'm missing). But my OEM version has a CD key with 25 characters. Not sure what the difference is. I did think that MS was trying to make it harder to install without a key, but I'm not sure.

I have the MS Office Premium (Retail, PC Zone) , which is a two (2) cd case with two (2) cd's each. The first set has a 25 character "Product Key" and the second set has a 10 character "CD Key".
