    Update didn't (XP SP-2)

I have Visio Professional and the Office Update said I should install a security patch KB822212, I downloaded it and tried to install it from the Office Update page but the install failed, with the message 'Installation Unsuccessful'. I was able to download and save the update from the Visio page, but when I tried run the executable, I got the message 'The update has already been applied or is included in an update that has already been applied.' The 'Add/Remove Programs' applet doesn't show anything changed. How can I tell if the patch was applied or not?

The security patch won't change the version of Visio. Mine still says SR-1 because it is not part of the XP Office service pack.

    Andrew--

    1) Could the issue on 822212: Overview of the Visio 2002 Security Patch: September 3, 2003 be that you need to install the Microsoft Windows Installer 1.1:

"Before you install this update, you must install Microsoft Windows Installer 1.1 or later. For additional information about this requirement, see the "Windows Installer Update Requirements" section of this article."

    2) Could any network server location be involved or is this a personal installation free of having some adminstrator update it?

"If you installed Visio from a server location, the server administrator must update the server location with the administrative update and deploy that update to your computer.

Take a look at the info at the bottom of the KB to see if any applies and if there is a server administrator involved, there is a download they can deploy in this KB.

To insure this Visio Update is Installed:

Start>Search>Search All Files and Folders>In the All or part of the file name box, type vbe6.dll, and then click Search>In the list of files, right-click vbe6.dll, and then click Properties>On the Version tab, determine the version of the vbe6.dll file that is installed on your computer.

"Note If the Microsoft Visio 2002 Security Patch: KB822212 is already installed on your computer, you receive the following error message when you try to install the Microsoft Visio 2002 Security Patch: KB822212:

This update has already been applied or is included in an update that has already been applied."

You can also use the Office Update Inventory Tool.

Finally you might want to check these registry keys:

    Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    Key: SOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionHotfix

This applies to NT, Win 2K, and Win XP.

    Also try:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftUpdatesWindows XPSP1

Hotfixes could also be listed at:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftUpdatesWindows 2000SPX where X could be 1-4

    Re: Update didn't (XP SP-2)

Thanks for the detailed reply. It apears that I do, indeed, have the patch installed, by one of the earlier Win XP or Office XP updates, as I have the latest vbe6.dll. It's a VB file rather than a Visio one, so I have no idea why the Updater said I needed it. I had read the KB822212 article, but obviously not carefully enough.
