e-mail alias (outlook2000)

Maybe a familiar question, but I couldn't find the solution.
I want to use short e-mail aliases, say three or four letters in a unique combination, for persons I regularly mail. Cannot set it up. I opened the contact, clicked on details (Dutch version, so tab may be named differently), filled in my three-letter combination in the alias-field, closed the contact. Entering these three letters in the 'to' field gave the answer that name was not found - closing and reopening outlook did not change anything. If I type in the full name, Outlook finds the address. Maybe my understanding of the 'alias' field is wrong?

    Re: e-mail alias (outlook2000)

Not much comfort, but I distinctly l remember learning this tip back around the time of Outlook 98. I thought it was from Woody, but I can't find it amongst my archives of WOW. I seem to remember having trouble with this in Outlook 2000 and it doesn't seem to work in Outlook 2003 either - 2, 3 or 4 letters. BTW Details IS the name of the tab in the English language version and Nickname is what the "alias-field" is called.

(Edited by JohnBF on 27-Oct-03 15:51. Sorry, unkamunka, thought I was replying to the OP.)
I can't find certain proof (and the MSKB was down when I went looking), but I notice that this field is within the "NetMeeting" section of the Contact Details dialog, so I suspect that it only applies in Corporate/WorkGroups Mode to Netmeeting aliases.

To use abbreviations for regular e-mail addresses you can tweak the Contact E-Mail Display Name (in the dialog when you right click the e-mail address, select Properties).

This may not be the answer that you are looking for but I accomplish the same thing by putting the short alias in the Full Name field of the Outlook Contact information. I put their actual name in the File As field so I still get their full name when I need it. Works for me!
