Office and Windows Compatibilities (Access (All))

I'm looking at getting new hardware, to include WinXP Pro. I understand that the new Office2003 actually requires WinXP or Win2000. What about prior versions of Office (back to Office97), can they still run on WinXP?

There are no special problems running Office 97, Office 2000 or Office XP on Windows XP. You can even install multiple versions of Office on the same PC, provided that you install the oldest version first, and that you install each version in its own folder. (I believe that Charlotte has at least two versions installed on the same machine, she'll be able to tell you more)

    Hans,

Thanks. I've got multiple versions of Office running now on Win98SE. However, a friend (who normally is pretty reliable) thought that Office97 and perhaps Office2000 wouldn't work with WinXP. I thought they would all work, but then I only just learned that Office2003 requires WinXP, so I thought maybe there was something I missed on the other versions.

    Hi Mark,
You might want to consider using the VirtualPC product that Microsoft just purchased from Connectix. My partner <!profile=KevinB>KevinB<!/profile> has worked quite a bit with it, and has set up such things as Windows95 running Office 2000. It lets you try lots of different combinations - he also did Office 4.3 on WinXP. There are some downsides, as it can be fairly resource intensive - he's running a 2.4G PC with 1GB of memory and sometimes wishes he had more, so that would factor into choices in buying hardware. Feel free to contact him if you have questions.

Old versions of Office run OK on new versions of Windows, but not vice versa: Office 97 and Office 2000 require Windows 95, Windows NT4 or higher, while Office XP requires Windows 98, Windows NT4 or higher, and Office 2003 requires Windows XP, Windows 2000 or higher.
