    TOC - force TC fields to be a certain level (word97 sr2b)

    Hi

    I have a TOC that contains 3 different entries
    Heading 2
    Heading 3 &
    Table of Contents entries

    Heres my TOC field code:
    { TOC T "HEADING 2,2,HEADING 3,3" F }

    each time I F9 - to update the TOC Word automatically places my TC entries at a certain level.

    My issue is I would like to force my TC entries at a certain level ie either TOC 1 or TOC 4.(so I can format the TC entries style differently).
    How can I do this?

    many thanks Diana

    <P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by Phil Rabichow on 28-Oct-03 18:16. I wrote too quickly the first time.)</P>Hi Diana:
    Disregard initial post. Specify the level when you create the TC entry (using Alt+Shift+O).

    The syntax is { TC "Text to display" f TableIdentifier l "1" }

    The last switch, l (that's an L), specifies the level. Actually, without any level specified after the f switch, they should be placed in TOC 1 style.
    Cheers,

    Hi Phil

    Before I posted I tried those switches.
    When I use your field codes & then one I had ago at previously - & F9 to update - the result is
    ERROR! NOT A VALID HEADING LEVEL RANGE

    Hi Diana:
    That happens if you try to specify the level in the TOC field code itself. The syntax that I posted is for the TC field. Try creating the TOC field anew by using Insert/Index & Tables & insert a TOC for TC fields. You can specify heading styles with levels & TC entries. Then modify the code if you have to.

    If this doesn't work for you, post one of the TC field codes so we can look at it.
    Cheers,

    Hey Phil

    I managed to solve this issue by amending the actual TC field itself.

    In the manual TC fieldcode
    { TC "SCHEDULE E1 - BASEWORKS " l 2 *MERGEFORMAT }

    The heading level is specified ie l 2.
    I amended to this a level heading not used ie l 4 ie
    { TC "SCHEDULE E1 - BASEWORKS " l 4 *MERGEFORMAT }

    When I F9 to update the TOC - it brought all the headings in as TOC 4. I just then set the TOC 4 style to how I wanted.

    Another question:
    Do you know if you can specify a TOC style to not display the page number for that TOC style, yet display the page numbers for all other TOC styles.
    I'm aware its a TOC fieldcode switch ie
    Insert>Field>Index and Tables > either field 'TC' or 'TOC' switch n - which suppresses page numbers for TOC.
    however this suppresses the page numbers for all the TOC - not a specific style.

    any ideas?
    Diana

    You can get close to this by deleting the tab stop in the "TOC n" style and creating a new tab stop that is off the right hand side of the page.

    Hi Diane:
    You can use a range of styles with the n switch. e.g.

    { toc "1-3" n "1-2" }

    creates a TOC with Headings 1 through 3, but with page numbers suppresed for Headings 1 & 2. Note that if you wanted pages numbers for Headings 1 & 2, but not Heading 3, you must use a full range. i.e.

    { toc "1-3" n "3-3" }
    Hope this helps,
