    Paragraph Symbols (Word 2000)

O.K., I feel like an idiot . . . how can you do a find and replace for a paragraph symbol in a document. Not the formatting paragraph mark at the end of every hard return, I'm talking about a printing paragraph symbol. I have a shortcut key for the symbol and that will not appear when I trigger it in the Find Box. As always, any help is appreciated!! Thanks.

The paragraph symbol has ANSI code 0182 (hex B6). You can search for ANSI codes by preceding them with a hat symbol ^, so enter ^0182 in the Find what box.

Thank you so much. I even saw in the status bar how to get the number of other symbols. I was able to do a seach with your help and some wildcards and correct my document.

    Thanks again.

In the Find/Replace box there is a MORE button at the bottom. If you click it, the bottom of the box will expand and show you more options. Click the Special button and paragraph will be one of the choices. It will place ^p on the line with your cursor.

To finalword, thanks for the reply, unfortunately that only searchs for the paragraph symbols that appear as a result of a hard return, not a printing paragraph mark.

The symbol that you call a "printing paragraph mark" actually has a name - it is called a pilcrow.

    Hi,

In 'Find' type Alt-0182. This generates the pilcrow character. Also, if you know where one appears, you could just copy it and paste it into 'Find'.

Alt+20 also works to create the pilcrow. But you can't find the pilcrow by putting ^20 in the Find box.

In Word 2002, pasting a pilcrow into the Find What box doesn't work - nothing is pasted.

The same is true with Word 2000. Neither the real paragraph mark nor the symbol will paste.
