Prompt to allow paste to clipboard (IE6.0.2600)

    Hi All:
When I go to http://tinyurl.com/ to create a tiny URL from a long one, I get a prompt asking me if I want to allow the site to paste the tiny URL to the clipboard. http://tinyurl.com/ is in my trusted zone, although the status bar states "Unknown zone" (mixed).

My question is, what setting would allow that site to paste without being prompted? I have my security settings for Trusted Zones to allow everything except to prompt for unsigned Active X & scripting that is not marked as safe. Even when I temporarily changed those to allow them without prompting, I still get the prompt.
    Thanks in advance,

What do you have for Scripting>Allow paste operations via Script?

Also, this could be built in to Windows. It's hard to see why a web site should have access to the Windows clipboard...

Re: Prompt to allow paste to clipboard (IE6.0.2600)

    Hi Jefferson:
That must be it. For trusted sites, I have it set to enable. For internet, I have it set for prompt. When I change it for the Internet zone to enable, I no longer get a prompt.

So it appears that the solution is to make sure the site is in my trusted zone. However, when I try to add the site "http://tinyurl.com/create.php" to my trusted zones, it says that it already is in another zone & that I must remove it before adding it to the trusted zone. I checked restricted zones & it's not there. "http://tinyurl.com/" is in my trusted zones.

I'm still confused. Although http://tinyurl.com/ is in my trusted zones, & all sites that start with http://tinyurl.com/ are supposedly in the trusted zone, IE thinks http://tinyurl.com/create.php isn't. I'm not sure why.

I think you only list the hostname, not the page, in the list. But why does it prompt you?? Not sure. Do you have the HTTPS requirement unchecked? Hmmm. A mystery.

The reason I have Prompt check for that setting is related to HTML e-mail in Outlook 2000. But the thread on it is so old, I think it's gone by now. And actually that would only affect the Restricted Zone. Maybe I have it set to Prompt in the Internet zone because I wanted to see how it actually got used. Yeah, that must be it. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

Don't know where that's located. In any event, I now know I can disable it if I want, but prefer to leave the Internet zone unable to paste to my clipboard without a prompt. Thanks for the help.

Jeff is correct -- you cannot list specific pages in the Trusted sites zone -- if you have the page listed, try listing the "tinyurl.com" name by itself. I don't think the HTTPS check box is responsible. If the green check appears in the Status bar, then the site is in your Trusted sites zone.

I go to the site and everything works well -- without a Prompt -- even though I have "Prompt" checked for copy/paste & drag/drop in the Internet zone. The Unknown/Mixed zone appears because of the ads on the side there (amazon, etc.), but they should have no role in the clipboard function. And, as best I can tell, only the main site (tinyurl.com) is providing the functionality to the site.

Re: Prompt to allow paste to clipboard (IE6.0.2600)

Thanks for this information, R2. I tried adding tinyurl.com, *://tinyurl.com, & www.tinyurl.com. Nothing changed. I'm using Win 98SE. I don't know why the setup is different. So far as I remember, this didn't always happen.

Trouble is, I've made numerous changes over the last two months & don't know a practical way of tracking this down. I've done Office updates, reinstalled Windows 98SE over itself, & 2 cummulative patches for IE 6, but I wouldn't think that would be related. Ah, well.
