    Win Explorer Icon

    Hi All,
I have NT 4 sp6 and every once in a while the icon for Win Explorer changes to a stop sign or some other icon. Normally it's the icon of a computer. I ran Norton on my pc but it did not turn up anything. I do have popup stopper and it's desktop icon is a stop sign. A reboot usually restores the icon.

Any idea's what else could be causing this?

This probably means that the file that stores the application icons has become corrupt. This file is named ShellIconCache and lives in C:WinNT. It is hidden, so you must display hidden files in Windows Explorer to see it. Do the following:

    - Close all applications.
    - Start Windows Explorer.
    - Locate and delete C:WinNTShellIconCache (it is probably a read-only file, confirm that you want to delete it.
    - Close Windows Explorer.
    - Start Task Manager.
    - Activate the Processes tab.
    - Kill all instances of Explorer.exe. Your task bar will disappear, but don't worry.
    - Use Task Manager to restart the computer.

The ShellIconCache file will be rebuilt.

    John,
In addtion to a corrupt file, this can happen if you have too little memory. It could be that it leads to a corrupt file. Not sure. How much RAM do you have?

Since I rebooted yesterday and left my PC on all night doing nothing, the Icon is now the internet explorer icon. I will try your suggestions.

I have 255 mb. I do notice that sometimes I loose some of the icons in the systray and that it is probably memory related. I must have some app that does not release memory very well.
