    Page numbering for dissertation

    Hi,
I am wondering how I go about the seemingly impossible task of page numbering for academic dissertations or thesis. Here is roughly what I need to do:
The first 3 pages have no page number
The next 3 pages have arabic numbers at the buttom
The next series of pages has arabic numbers at the top right of the page.
There is yet another section where the first page of the section is numbered at the bottom, but the following pages are at the top right.
I know the answer probably lies in creating section breaks, but doing so, shifts the text down a little which throws of the spacing of the whole document.
Is there an easy way to turn off the "same as previous" option in the header/footers?

    Hope this isn't too confusing.
    Thanks in advance.
    Rob

    Hi Bobbis:

Yes, you'll need to use section breaks. Assuming you have none in your document now, do the following:
    1. File/Page Setup.../Layout tab & select the option that section breaks start a new page & click OK.

    2. Back in the document, place the insertion point at the beginning of page 4.

    3. Choose Insert/Break/Section Break/New Page (make sure you didn't choose Next page under page break. Your spacing should stay the same, except where you have a style that has space before. If so, you can right click that first paragraph, choose paragraph..., & change the spacing to zero (Indents & Spacing/Spacing/Before). I should point out that in complex documemnts, since much of the formatting is contained in section breaks, it is a place where corruption can occur. I've heard Keeping a paragraph mark between your section breaks seems to decrease that possibility. But it does change spacing.

    4. Go to View/Header and Footer & go to page 4 footer. Click the "same as previous" button on the header/footer toolbar. This is how you turn off the option. Tab to where you want the page number & use the button on the header/footer toolbar to insert the page number.

    5. Now go to page 7 & with the insertion point at the very top, insert your section break.

    6. Go to the header on page 7. Turn off the "same as previous", tab twice to place the insertion point at the right margin tab stop, & then insert your page number.

    8. Repeat the steps of creating a section break & changing the "same as previous" option in header/footer.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Page numbering for dissertation

To add to what Phil said, for the section where you want the first page numbered at the bottom and following pages numbered top right, use the page setup option of "different first page" for headers and footers.

When you apply that option, make sure that it says that it applies to "this section" rather than to the whole document.

When inserting your page numbers, use the header/footer toolbar rather than the Insert => Page Number... command.

For something more in depth you may want to look at:
    <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.addbalance.com/usersguide/sections.htm>Sections, Section Breaks, Headers and Footers</A> (www.addbalance.com/usersguide/sections.htm).

You may also want to look at the thesis template and directions linked from <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.addbalance.com/word/wordwebresources.htm#Templates>Web Resources for Word - Templates</A> (http://www.addbalance.com/word/wordw....htm#Templates).

Other thoughts on preparing a thesis:

Under no circumstances use the Master Documents feature except for printing from a copy.

When inserting graphics, link to graphic files rather than inserting them into your Word file. Do most of your editing using Normal view.

If using any automatic numbering, take a look at <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Numbering/WordsNumberingExplained.htm>Word's Numbering Explained</A> (http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Number...gExplained.htm)

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Charles:

    Thanks for catching that. I overlooked that step. <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15>
