    problems booting

I'm running Windows 98 2nd ed. and a Celeron Processor. Yesterday I installed a few programs on my computer. Two were WINRAR and WINACE, both of which are a lot like Winzip. I also installed a Digital Studion by ExtremeMedia and MGI Photosuite 4. Following the last installation, I couldn't completely restart my computer. It goes through all the normal start up procedures and when the windows startup screen pops up it slows down then doesn't do anything. It sounds like the computer is still working on something, but nothing ever happens. Today I booted in safe mode and uninstalled most of the programs from yesterday. I don't know how I got it to start in safe mode, and it still won't boot completely. What do you suggest? Thank you for your help.

    Re: problems booting

Restart the computer, go to DOS mode and type scanreg /restore, notice the space between scanreg and the /
Now choose a backup date that was before the problem started.

If you need it,hear is a step by step

    Re: problems booting

how do I get into DOS when booting...I can't even get into windows, it just sits there right before the prompt for a username and password. I would boot in safe mode but I don't know how to pause the startup or at what spot to do that so that I can select boot in safe mode. Can you get me through this?

    Re: problems booting

Immediately after booting, press F8 repeatedly until the boot menu appears. This menu will have several options, among which Safe Mode and Command Prompt Only. You must select an option within 30 seconds or so, or at least use the arrow keys to get away from the first option.

Thanks HansV and cowboydaw for your help. That restore function worked great. I'm back in business again. Thanks again.
