    Exporting Graphs to Powerpoint/Excel (XP)

This is driving me crazy - I want to automate the output of a report which contain graphs to Powerpoint and or Excel without the user needing to copy and paste the object from a form (as recommended in the Microsoft Knowledge bank). Any ideas?

Automation (formerly known as OLE Automation) is your best bet. With it you can build your graphs in Excel using VBA in Access to manipulate the Excel object model. It can be tedious, but works pretty well. PowerPoint is a little less weildy as it doesn't expose as much of its object model, but should in theory work also. If you haven't seen it, a good place to start is <!mskb=302460>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 302460<!/mskb>. In addition, there is a help file for Automation that you should avail yourself of. Finally, you might find our tutorial useful in getting started.

As far as I know, there is no way to export a chart from a report to PowerPoint or Excel. A report is a graphic image meant to be viewed or printed, and Microsoft hasn't provided a decent conversion to Word, Excel or PowerPoint. Using a form is one workaround; creating a chart in Excel based on data linked to an Access table or query is another workaround. If you like, this can be automated, but it is a lot of work.

See for instance ACC2000: How to Create an MS Graph in PowerPoint Using Access.

You can automate sending the report, graph and all, to snapshot format or, if you have a pdf printer, to pdf format. Both of those will preserve the look of the graph, but getting them from there into PowerPoint is something I've never tried. You could try exporting it to html format, but that loses graphics. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>
