    File Sharing (XPsp1)

I'm trying to share a file folder between two desktops (windows networking) when I change the properties from read only XP accepts the change but then defaults back to "read only" next time I check the properties. When I try to map to this file from another machine on the network I get a message that the file is "read only" Can't seem to figure a way to beat the default. <img src=/S/brickwall.gif border=0 alt=brickwall width=25 height=15>

Folder properties always show as read only in XP. Have you set up the folder as shared on the source machine? If so, make sure that you have the permissions set to allow the user on the other machine the type of access you desire.

    Joe,

Thanks for the reply! I have tried everything I can think of! Checked all the permissions to allow full access to the file. Still get the same response when I try to map to this file from the other machine. Some how the program that I want to share the files with sees the defaulted "read only" attribute of the folder and won't access it. Is there a way to override the default "read only" parameter. I think MS did this in service pack 1. Is there a registry fix? I would like the option of setting the read only attribute rather than by arbitrary default. <img src=/S/cauldron.gif border=0 alt=cauldron width=20 height=20>

There is a handy little utility called, of all things, "Clear Read Only Attributes" that may do the trick for you. Once installed, if you right click on a folder, there is an additional item in the drop down menu, that says: Clear read only attributes?.

    It's a <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> program and you can get it at READ ONLY

    Give it a try.

When setting up this share, did you check the box to "Allow Network users my change files", if not this may be the proble?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I don't think you can change it. The explanation I saw was that this does not mean the folder contents are necessarily read-only just that you can not modify the folder itself. Is this XP home or pro? Can you post a picture of your 'Sharing' and 'Security' information?
