Plague of late & dismissed reminders (2000 SP3/Win2k)

KB321179 says late reminders are fixed by SP3. If only! My reminders are often not only late, but when one triggers, previously dismissed reminders can cascade back. It's quite a performance, especially at startup. Many of the files listed in 321179 are not on my system. Is that a problem? Those I do have are all of the dates specified, except for cdo.dll. SP3 will not re-install. Desperate DaveH.

Have you tried Search and Repair - in the Help choice on the Worksheet Menu Bar? If you have, have you also tried reinstalling Office 2000?

The only other housecleaning I've heard of is to start Outlook with the /cleanreminders switch. I don't remember the details of what this does, exactly, but it's probably worth a Google.

Thanks Jefferson. I tried the switch twice, without any apparent effect on the problem. Dave

Unkamunka, many thanks. Search and repair yielded no benefits, so now I'm ready to tackle a reinstall. Can you take me through the required steps? Not sure whether to remove first, or just run install over again. My CD is the original Office 2000, before service packs, but I have applied SP3. Dave.

Removing any Office installation has yet to become a genuine uninstall. In any event, I would recommend uninstalling and reinstalling rather than simply installing over the top. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>This will bring you back to where you were in the first instance.

It could be that you have something else in the ointment that is causing you your issues. Just in case: you don't have any Outlook add-ins of any kind installed do you?

    No add-inns in Outlook2000 or Outlook98, from which it was upgraded. I'll do a re-install after a few days of prayer, meditation and counselling. <img src=/S/aussie.gif border=0 alt=aussie width=21 height=22>

Following Jefferson's suggestion, if you are on an Exchange Server, did you try restarting with the "/cleanfreebusy" switch?

Thanks John. Not running Exchange. Bravely tried the switch anyway. No joy. Re-install coming up soon.

in all honesty, i'll be shocked if a reinstall works - i don't think it's a file problem, but is a bad reminder in your mailbox. Reinstalls never fix them. FWIW, i think reinstalls are highly overused and often recommended by tech support because they are clueless.

Did you try the /cleanreminders switch yet? if it doesn't work, get outlook spy or mdbvu and delete the reminders so outlook can rebuild them. But i've never seen cleanreminders fail, so i don't think you'll need either program.

Mary, how would you use Outlook Spy to determine that a reminder (or anything else) is corrupt, or did you mean something in terms of using Spy? If the latter can you explain in more detail how would you use it in this circumstance?

If you were on Exchange the there would be a number of things to check. Given all the advice that has failed, I'd suggest running SCANPST. You can get this on the MS downloads site.

If this doesn't work, there are several folk around here who can write some script to go in and turn off all your alarms/Reminders. That is pretty simple. Of course, you'd then want to go and manually turn them back on for future items. The script won't do any good if you've deleted those old tasks/appointments btw.

As a last resort you could make a backup pst, copy your calender items to it. Delete the calender folder. The start OL with the /resetfolders switch to create a new folder.

Thanks Mary, John, Olddog. Those posts are really worth pursuing over coming days, and will take me into new territory. Mary: /cleanreminders did not work. Grateful Dave
