Menus behaving badly - L-mouse button strange

    Hi Guys,

Every now and then something happens to my keyboard and mouse and it stops behaving like it used to. Left clicking or double-clicking the mouse button on the icons in the taskbar doesn't open the programs anymore, but brings up the but brings up the properties menu -so I have to right click and select open. THis happened to the start menu as well - the normal menu doesn't pop up but the right-mouse button short menu pops up and I have to select 'open', in which case I get a windo with the start menu folders displayed.

In excel, when I select a cell, it seems to anchor itself there and if I move the mouse it keeps highlighting the area from that point.

And the tab key stopped working as it did - instead of shift ing between fields within a program, it now switches between taskbar items.

I think with a restart everything will be back to normal, but why does it happen? I vaguely remember someone mentioning a "control lock" key combination that does change the behaviour of the keyboard and mouse buttons. Maybe I have pressed some key combination accidentally?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi terner:

    Hi Terner:

I suppose it could be several things, but offhand there's one place I'd start. Go to Control Panel/Accessibility Options/Sticky Keys & Filter Keys & see if that's turned on.

However, the menus are another story & tab key are another story. It's strange that it's all happening at once, because it could be that the keyboard itself or mouse needs replacing. It would be rare for both to fail at the exact same moment.

Still, some basic things, like checking the connections & cleaning may help. I suppose also that something running in the background might interfere. You might load a utility called Filemon from http://www.sysinternals.com, which will let you know what's running in the background.

And maybe someone else has some ideas. Good luck.

Terner the problem you are encountering is reasonably common. The alt key is sticking and causing the mouse and tab to operate differently to normal. The alt key in conjunction with the left mouse becomes right mouse, and alt and tab behaves differently to tab.

I have found in the past when this happens that pressing the alt key a few times solves the problem.

Yep.. this happens to me quite frequently, and I don't think i'm a complete dolt... I'd have to support Mikeb's theory, because although I don't restart, it does just kinda "go away" all by itself..
