Re: Norton's has a new definition

Symantec has been releasing new antivirus definitions every day this week starting Monday October 27, 2003 and every Monday through Friday this year and last year by on the average 2PM-5PM Eastern or 11AM-2PM Pacific in Cupertiono, California and very rarely on the weekend and you have to manually download them from here:

    Intelligent Updater Response Site

The reason why you have to manually update if you want the new ones that are always available on the Intelligent Updater Site Monday through Friday are best explained here:

Re: Norton's has a new definition

I haven't gone to any of the usual web sites to see, but there must be something going on in the wild this week! As some of you know, I've been using PC-Cillin ever since I dumped McAfee and have been VERY pleased with its performance and unobtrusiveness. This week, their usual little popup windows on my screen, informing that there's a new pattern available, have happened several times this week already. Yesterday there were even TWO instances in one day - the second being a "yellow alert." The dirt bags must be hard at work this week.....

There was an article in the PC World newsletter regarding a new worm variation "Sober Virus" described by McaFee as Low Profile.

I paid a visit to Trend Micro after I wrote that last post and their "yellow alert" yesterday was because of WORM_MIMAIL.C and the next one on their list was VBS_INOR.A. Ahhh, the challenges of "safe computing!"

Re: Norton's has a new definition

Articles on the new worms have begun to crop up all over the web starting in the afternoon Friday:

[url="http://news.com.com/2100-7349_3-5100741.html?tag=nefd_top"]Mimail.c worm Causes DOS Attack variant of mimail.

This is showing up in with the subject line "Our Private Photos" and it promises to show you "revealing photos," but I'm not sure exactly revealing what--but it encourages you to open a Zip file, and if you do open the zip then the worm spreads by culling messages from the infected PC, and in addition sends a ton of junk data to launch a DOS attack associated with a Gamer site called Dark Profits.

Symantec Response Upgrades Mimail from Category 2 to 3 Threat
