Dragging report onto Word document (XP & 2000)

I subscribe to a daily tip service from one of the major magazines for PC users. Recently they sent a tip that told how one can drag an Access report onto an open Word document or Excel spreadsheet. The way I read it, you start with Access and Word in the restore mode, then drag the icon for the report from the database window onto the Word document. That sounded just too cool, so I tried it...and I could not get it to work as advertised!

I tried it with both Word and Excel. I tried it both at work (Win2K and Office XP) and at home (WinXP and Office XP) and got the same disappointing results. With Word, I noticed that the Status Bar displayed "Copy where?" as my mouse pointer moved into Word's space. Word behaved as if something was gonna get pasted, but...nothing happened.

I wrote to the editor of those tips and reported my results, and I asked what I might have overlooked. The editor replied nine days later thusly: "The techniques should work with Office XP, however the process unfortunately only works with table or query objects. Best regards...." Nine days, and that's the best he could do? <img src=/S/brickwall.gif border=0 alt=brickwall width=25 height=15> OK, fellow members of the Access forum: have any of you had success with this technique?

I just tried it in Access 2002 and Word 2002. Yes, I can drag a table or query from the database window to a Word document. The applications don't need to be restored. If they are maximized, drag the table or query from the database window to the Word document icon in the Windows Task Bar; don't release the mouse button yet, but wait until Word comes to the foreground, then move the mouse pointer to the document and release the mouse button.
Dragging and dropping forms, reports and modules doesn't work. For reports, you can use the Publish with Word menu option in Access, disappointing as it is.

Access doesn't use the same kind of forms or controls that Word and Excel use, so dragging those objects isn't going to work in 2000 or XP. I can't say on 2003, but I suspect that hasn't changed yet.

Thanks for setting me straight, Hans! After I read your reply, I went back and re-read that little tip, and now I see they were discussing tables and queries, just as you wrote. I was trying to drag a report, and that's why I got the results I described. I tried dragging a table, and it worked fine.

Yes, I've used the Publish with Word option, and so far I've been fairly happy with the result. It has never done exactly what I expect it to do, but I've usually gotten a document I can edit to make it look the way I want.
