Win 2000 won't show me Thimbnail View

Loungers

Is there a setting that makes Windows 2000 pro show or not show Thumbnail view?

I have some .JPG files that I need to rename in sequence and it will be very helpful to be able to see the image as I rename these files.

Is there a limit on how many images are in one folder that affects this setting?

Thanks a million.

Re: Win 2000 won't show me Thimbnail View

Windows remebers 400 folder views as default, but it can be increased as large as 8000 possibly larger if you are into lots of folders.

See:

Folder View XP Sept. 22, 2003

Thumbnail View XP May 9, 2003

These should help you XP or Win 2K.

The registry setting for this with the default at 400 folders:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShell
Value Name: BagMRU Size
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: Default = 400 folders

Create a new DWORD value called "BagMRU Size" and set it to the number of folders that Windows should save settings for (e.g. 1000).

Repeat the step for the same value at [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShellNoRo am].

Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

I had the same problem, and I"m not sure where I found my solution, but I found this MSKB article that should help. This is something that can get messed up if you uninstall Microsoft's Photo Editor, or set a different program as the default for the particular file type.

Registry key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTfile typeShellEx{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}

Value: (Default)="{7376D660-C583-11d0-A3A5-00C04FD706EC}"

I guess the 400 is the level of folders deep, or the number of folders that Windows can remember?

If its the latter, do nested folder count as 1 level, or as many levels as there are folders?

What about the number of items to display? Like if I have 20,000+ images, would that count or has no baring?

Thanks again

Sorry I forgot to add to my earlier reply, and did not feel like editing it either, so I am responding to your next reply

Would increasing the number of folders Windows remember affect Windows Explorer, or Windows itself's performance?

How about disk space?

Thanks

The MSKB article did the trick. Also there is a link in that article to others as well, helpful.

Thanks

Re: Win 2000 won't show me Thimbnail View

400 is the number of folders whose folder view settings are remembered by default in Win XP. You can up this number to 1000 by adding this to the registry:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShell]
"BagMRU Size"=dword:000003e8

[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShellNoRo am]
"BagMRU Size"=dword:000003e8

I am not sure that nested folders do count Wassim, good question, because I haven't made any of these changes and I can guarantee with a quick look that I have a lot m ore than 400 folders nested. I am not having any trouble getting the settings to stick--I use View>Show in Groups alphabetical except for my downloads folder and there last modified. The images you have shouldn't figure in this equation.
