    Multiple column/row selection + right-click (Excel

A friend has reported a weirdness in her Excel 2000 that has stumped me. Using the mouse, she selects multiple columns by clicking on A and dragging to D (not limited to these, just using them as an example). Then when she right clicks on any letter A, B, C, or D, at the top of a column, the multiple column selection disappears and only the column on which she right-clicked remains selected. She says this happens when selecting multiple rows as well. What is expected to happen is that all the columns/rows remain selected when the contextual menu is called.

This machine is brand new (Win2000, Office2000 SP-3 w/ latest patches). A second machine on her desk with the same version of Excel and the same options checked (she did a side by side comparison of Tools->Options), does not exhibit this behavior, nor does my own machine. This new computer seems to be the anomaly.

    Any ideas?

Remote possibility, check the Control Panel Mouse Right-Click setting.

    Re: Multiple column/row selection + right-click (E

It is a Dell branded optical mouse and I have a Microsoft optical mouse, so our settings are a bit different, but her right mouse click is set to "Contextual Menu/Special Drag". This sounds like it is set correctly. My Microsoft Intellimouse settings says "Right-click (default)". I asked her to switch mice with another computer. Am waiting to hear back from her.

In an update, the user has reported that if she holds down the Control key, the function works as it should. Weird.

<img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20> I have no idea. Anything odd about keyboard settings, or special keyboard key programming? Has the user tested the operation of multiple column selection and right clicking in a Word Table, or any other test that shows whether this behavior is limited to Excel or occurs in all applications?
