Windows update - no way (XP SP1)

Can someone please explain the comment below when I click on the windows update site via tools menu. The end result is that I cannot access the update site. I had set for automatic updates and was wondering if this was a contributing factor to this unavailability. With a new computer and new install of XP I find this puzzling.

Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the most out of your computer.

You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system in order to use Windows Update.

I notice in "Who's Online" that your browser is not listed. The error message is probably a plot by Microsoft to get you to use Internet Explorer. See WINUP: Cannot Access Windows Update When Netscape Is the Default Web Browser.

I wish it was that simple. I am running IE 6 update version SP1 Q 828750. This is and still is the only browser I have used on this new install.

Still, there must be something strange with your browser setup. A web page can query which browser you are using, so that adjustments can be made. Who's Online uses this to display the browser next to the user name. See screenshot. For example, IE6 is listed after my username, but none is listed after yours. So apparently, your browser doesn't broadcast its identity. This may confuse the Windows Update site.

Re: Windows update - no way (XP SP1)

I noticed this anomally also when checking out your reply to my post. So I went to the Control panel Add/Remove components and noted that IE 6 was not listed but IE6 Q 828750 (being 1.54mb in size) was and wondered if this was a factor in the problem. Pending your reply I may just do a reinstall from the xp disk to see if this resolves the problem.

Re: Windows update - no way (XP SP1)

On my system, IE is listed in the Add/Remove programs control panel as "Internet Explorer Q828750".

Before re-installing, visit Windows Update Troubleshooter (if possible <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>) and scroll down to "When attempting to access the Windows Update Web site you receive the following message: Thank You -- you must be running a Microsoft windows operating system in order to use windows update". Click on this line. There is a suggested explanation (Windows XP's Internet Control Firewall and another firewall enabled) and a registry fix.

One other possibility: if your firewall does something called "OS Fingerprint Masquerading", your computer will appear not to be running Windows to the outside world. This may seem a good idea for protection against viruses, but obviously, this will disable Windows Update.

Re: Windows update - no way (XP SP1)

The registry change did not resolve the problem. However your Firewall tip was the answer in part, I looked in the setting on the firewall options to disable or turn off OS fingerprint Masquradind, without luck. However, as is evident now I have disabled this product and can enter the window update site and you can see the browser on the who online. So I will post a question to this well known firewall products web site. Thank you for your imput.
Once off this site I will again enable this product.

If you use Norton Internet Security or its close cousins, there is a tab of privacy settings that blocks your browser's name from being transmitted. Since WindowsUpdate requires an ActiveX control, I believe Microsoft will not serve the page to a non-IE-based Windows browser.

I don't know if the problem you're having that seems clearly firewall related is touched by this KB or not--but I will include the links that make it quick and easy to update and you never have to look at Win update again until they fully redo it with Longhorn as Microsoft Update in 2006:

312955: Windows Update May Not Work in Windows XP If an Authenticating Web Proxy Is Used

If you update this way, you don't have to worry about seeing Windows Update pages:

Thanks for your solution. It was the answer with a bit of investigation.
