* Task Manager Now A Task * (XP Pro SP1)

To get the Task Manager to pop up, I used to simply give the three finger salute. Now when I do that, I get a 'Windows Security' window with the option to select 'Task Manager', 'Lock Computer', 'Log Off', 'Shut Down', 'Change Password' or 'Cancel'.

I am not aware of what I may have done to elicit this new window - any ideas?

Have you changed from the Welcome screen (withi Icons) to the NT type of log in? If so this is your issue.

Hi Bruce,

Not sure just when that started, but I get the same thing. Been that way for a while, too.
I THINK it may have been part of one of MS's hotfixes, or SP's??

Don't know if there is a work around.

Bob,
How do you log into Windows with the Welcome screen or the NT log in screen?

It is NOT part of the Hot Fixes or we ALL would be there, and it is not on ANY of my machines or any that I support except for the ones set for the Win NT log in.

DaveA.

I don't log on using the Welcome screen, Therefore, I must be using the NT login. I just don't remember when this started this way. I did have the regular response to the 3 finger salute at one time but now I have the same as Bruce describes. I don't think I ever had the welcome screen log in being used. Wonder if there is some other attribute to this?

Hi, Dave ~

I hadn't changed anything. The 'Welcome Screen' is checked on the Control Panel. I think Bob was on to something. This did occur after an update recently, but only on 3 of 7 machines. I unchecked 'Welcome Screen', rebooted, rechecked 'Welcome Screen', rebooted and now it seems to be back.

Thanks, gentlemen!

Switch to the Welcome screen and restart your computer and then see if it works. Then switch back to the NT screen and if it changes back, you know that is happening. All documentation I have read on this, this is how is has always worked. I first ran into this during Beta1 testing.

Dave,
It looks like everyone is right on this. Using SMBP's 3rd link (281980 ) it states:

SYMPTOMS
When you use the keyboard combination CTRL+ALT+DEL to open the Windows Security window, Task Manager is opened instead.
CAUSE
This issue occurs if you configured Microsoft Windows XP to use the Welcome screen.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, disable the Welcome screen. To do this, follow these steps:
In Control Panel, click User Accounts.
Click Change the way users log on or off.
Click to clear the Use the welcome screen for fast and easy logon check box.
Click OK.
NOTE: The Fast User Switching option is disabled if the Welcome screen is disabled.
STATUS
This behavior is by design.

If it was by design, then Bruce and I had it configured the other way around. THEN...what changed it back? I think it was included in one of MS's hotfixs, since they do consider it a potential security risk, if it opens directly to Task Manager.

Re: * Task Manager Now A Task * (XP Pro SP1)

I want to throw these in as helpful info on this topic, although a little wide in some of their aspects, but still the passwords, logon, ctrl+alt+delete+Task Manager, Task Scheduler, and their evolution in windows are connected. I left out the kitchen sink using self-restraint:

311119: Task Scheduler Does Not Run Tasks When "Run As" User Account Has No Password

I noticed Kelly's XP under Task Manger has two link to a "lift restrictions" on Ctrl+Alt+Delete--which might have gotten Bruce back to the accustomed Task Manager mode. It's here:

Lift Restrictions - TM, Regedit and CMD (Line 275) at here Tweaks Section and Enable the Task Manger (Line 51)

Also and this is a remote possibility on the outter superficial edge of Group Policy there is a place where it could be disabled--

Start/Run/gpedit.msc. User Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Crtl+Alt+Del Options. In the right pane double click Remove Task Manager and enable it.

Kelly also has a number of ways to extract Task Manager from the CD and restore it should you need to--Viruses have been known to be mean to it and take it out.

Also this is a helpful reference from Kelly:

If you are trying Dave's way to prove what brings up the "Windows Security" window, for kicks see what Ctrl+Alt+Escape will do. Probably the same as Ctrl+Alt+Delete since it's just another way to bring up Task Manager besides right clicking the task bar as a third but I wondered...

This doesn't seem related to the Task Manager. In my configuration, this seem to minimize the current window and rotate to the next window in the Z-order. It's a rather "unergonomic" combination; Alt+Tab works better for me.

Re: * Task Manager Now A Task * (XP Pro SP1)

Thanks for the correction. The third combo to bring up Task Manger should have been Ctrl+Shift+Escape--not particularly more ergonomic but it'll get Task Manager up. Ctrl+Alt+Escape doesn't do anything that I can see.
