Bizarre Word stripped-formatting problem (Word 2000)

I have a very odd question about Microsoft Word, though it doesn't
pertain to any specific column. It's simply a very bizarre situation
which you might be able to assist on.

About half an hour ago, I noticed that when I open any Word
document file I have, they are all completely stripped of formatting.
Plus, there is a mass of odd "information" at the end of documents.

I opened a document first thing this morning, and it was fine. Just to
test it now, I closed it and reopened it...and the formatting was gone.
I reformatted it new, closed it and when I re-opened it, the formatting
was fine. So, it's obviously able to accept formatting.

I then checked an old Word document that was saved on my Zip disk, and
it opened perfectly fine, with proper formatting. So, it appears that
the problem is only on documents residing on my hard disk.

Does this make any sense to anyone? Is there anything that can be done
which will return the formatting, or is it all gone? Is there perhaps a
template that got corrupted, and which can be added back? (I'm not
holding my breath on this, but I'm grasping at straws here.)

I have Windows XP and Word 2000. Prior to several hours ago, this
combination worked just fine. I'm not terribly anxious to have all my
formatting gone on every Word document I've ever written, but that does
appear to be what I'm facing.

(I am going to try to attach a sample document file. Hopefully, I'll do that correctly.)

This document looks fine to me. Are you opening it with "Recover text from any file"?
If so then try changing the drop down box to All Files (*.*)

    Stuart,

Thanks very much for your note. You may have seen my response to Phil as to the problem and resolution.

I have no idea what caused the "strippping" glitch in the first place. Since you could see the file correctly (trust me, it looked like a total mess on my computer), I assume that there was something in my copy of Word that had gotten screwed up, rather than the document file itself. Or not. Or whatever.

Anyway, with everyone's appreciated comments here, and the miracle of backup restoring, things *appear* okay now.

    Thank you, again.

    I'm noticing more weird things happening in drop-down lists since I got a scrolling-wheel mouse. So it's a hardware problem. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
