A Bad Patch? How Do You Know? (Windows XP Home)

My CPU usage goes up to 100%, and stays there for a while. How do I know if I have a bad patch? Please help!
    Thanks in advance!

Right click an empty part of the Windows task bar, and select Task Manager. Activate the Processes tab and see which process takes up most of the processor capacity (CPU).

There have been no general problems with Windows XP patches recently, as far as I know. The last time that occurred was in March or April of this year.
