Paste loses formats erratically?? (2000 SP3)

We have a bunch of spreadsheets we've been using for years to generate simple quotes by pasting sections of one document into a Saved-As copy of a previous quote. (For instance, we'll have a previous quote that's almost exactly what we want, but we need to add a block for another product, so we paste that block in from another spreadsheet.)

This has always worked fine. But, starting yesterday, the paste loses some formatting, or even lose a formula: for instance it'll lose Centering, or it'll lose the Currency format (it becomes a plain number).

If we paste the same thing into a new spreadsheet, there's no problem - it only happens when pasting into a previously existing one (Saved As).

Any idea what might be happening? The problem appears not to be specific to a particular machine because it happens the same on other machines.

This seems to be the root of the problem. Over time, all sorts of extraneous "dust" creeps into files and eventually they start becoming corrupt. You will probably need to have some code that will take each of your old files and transfer all the exisiting data into new files.

Save the files as HTML and then re-save the HTML versions as xls.
