Loss of Formatting? (Word 97)

Hello. One of my colleagues just asked me about a strange problem he had with a word document. He opened it from his hard drive and all the formatting had been lost. All text was reverted to Normal style with the normal.dot applied, the TOC entries were listed as normal but no longer as fields (what was really strange was that the TOC page reference codes for each TOC entry was also still included but in normal text. That is usually something you don't see at all... even when you view hidden text. I'm not talking about the RD codes or TOC codes. These looked like codes for each page listed in the TOC. ) He wouldn't let me ask enough questions to see if any of the graphics were still there... or at least some sort of reference to them. I did notice however, that all the cover art was gone. (there was a thick line down the side of the page and another going across. no big deal really, but it was gone.) Is there something he could have done to strip this document of all its attributes?

He did tell me that he had taken a document created with our cover template and a document created with our department template and merged them together. It worked for a while for him but could this have caused Word to choke?

He had a back up copy so he's working on that so this is no big rush... I just want to know for future reference.
Thanks
have fun

I hate to ask this, but are you sure he hasn't selected "Recover text from any file (*.*)" in the Files of Type dropdown list of the File | Open dialog?

He refuses to admit he did anything out of the ordinary when opening this file... (likes to blame things on Word, he's a Word Perfect buff and since we don't use it... and haven't in his three+ year history of working here...)
If he does it again I'll check (I just reproduced it and saw what that does... I think it could very well be what happened with him...)
Thank you!!

Tell him it's not his fault, it's going around. It might be a "virus." He should gargle with salt water just in case.
