Keyboard woes (XP PRo (SP1))

Hello, my keyboard is getting old and grey. I live in Japan and today I picked up a Japanese keyboard. I've connected it but I cannot make Windows XP recognise it. It's still using the western keyboard settings - all the punctuation is in a different place so it's driving me potty. How can I get Windows XP to recognise it is dealing with a Japanese keyboard layout? Under Regional and Language preferences I have English as the default language with Japanese input as an option. With English I have installed a Japanese keyboard and removed the US keyboard but this isn't working. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Chris (Hunt)

Did it come with any drivers or an installation disk?

Thanks for replying - it came by itself. I've never seen a keyboard come with any drivers or installation disks - I didn't know they had them.

Chris,
This is from the MS keyboard troubleshooting section.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Is the software for your mouse or keyboard installed?
Some mouse and keyboard devices require special software (other than a driver) to run them. If you do not install this software, the device might not work at all, or some of its features might not work correctly.

If your device came with software, follow the manufacturer's instructions to install it. If you have just upgraded to a new version of Windows, you might need an updated version of the software also.

Contact the manufacturer of your device, or visit the manufacturer's Web site, to find out whether a software update is available
--------------------------------------------------------------

Also, check the MS site to see if that new keyboard in on the HCL ( hardware compatibility list )

Chris,

Also go to Regional & Language Options ( control Panel ) >languages, check install files for East Asian Languages. ( this is not installed by default )
Might also try in the advanced tab, code page conversion tables for Japanese.

There seem to be a number of options in there that MAY be required. Never having had to get into that, I can't say for sure , but it wouldn't hurt to try them out. You can always disable them if they don't work out.

Re: Keyboard woes (XP PRo (SP1))

Thanks Bob. I discovered I should never make any changes to my system when I am tired (again) . I have the files for East Asian Languages Installed. What I failed to realise is that of course the keyboard is no longer the standard 102 keyboard. It's got more keys. I did need to update the driver. But when I went and looked at the keyboard driver in the device manager I couldn't find reference to a Japanese keyboard. After a search on the internet I found someone had found the trick I needed. I updated the driver, chose to choose from a list and then unclicked the check box 'show compatible hardware'. This then gave me the choice of installing a 106/109 Japanese Keyboard. Windows gave me a couple of warnings about the device being incompatible but I ignored them. The keyboard seems to be responding fine now.

Thanks again,

Chris
