kernel usage at 100% - Why? What?

Periodically my pc stops accepting input for a while (eg mouse or keyboard input) or stops processing data (eg .mp3 music). System monitor indicated that at these times kernel usage was at 100% and could suddenly jump there from a prior usage figure of under 10% with no other applications started. What I want to find out is what is causing this, any recommendations greatly appreciated.

Check for Spyware. Also, use Task Manager to see what program or programs are using the most resources.

    Hi 2Swiley

With reference to Cowboy's post, check out Anti Adware, Spyware, Hijack for free downloads that might help.

    Have a Great day!!!

    Cowboydawg,
    Thanks for the suggestions.
I run Spybot periodically and it finds and cleans out some things but doesn't make a difference to the 100% utilisation issue.
Re Task Manager, I'm using WindowsME and it doesn't have this useful feature (unlike WindowsNT or 2000 or XP) and I'm looking for a program that will tell me that information.

What antivirus software are you running - does it happen to be McAfee?

    Hi Stephen

Sysinternal's free Process Explorer should give you a good idea of what's running and what CPU resources are being used.

Thanks for the interest. I really appreciate it. Having my PC lock up for several seconds intermittently is a real annoyannce.
I run Norton Antivirus 2003 and haven't ever used McAfee on this PC or for years.

    Perfect Ken,

Thanks to you and the sysinternals programmers that is exactly what I need to inspect my pc usage. Have it running now and whoops just missed a lockup while typing this. Will get it next time and I can't see any strange processes running.

    Most appreciative
    Stephen
