Favorites Don't Work (XP & 2003)

Recently, some people's Favorites have stopped working, and we're all stumped.

When some people click Favorites on the Menu, it doesn't expand to show the objects/links contained on the menu.

As stated, this has only happened suddenly. It seems that one by one, people's Favorites are breaking in Outlook (still work in IE).

Is this the result of a Windows Update, or does anyone know why this is happening? I've checked MSKB under 'Outlook Favorites', but no article seems to refer to this?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Tried that. Just deleted Favorites from my Menu Bar??????

Does MS not *want* people using Outlook to surf the web anymore?????

    Thanks for your reply.

I thought XP = outlook 2002 [oops] Yes, it was removed from Outlook 2003, since Outlook isn't a web browser (file browsing was removed too). You can add shortcuts to the shortcut bar though, just not use the entire favorites folder.

I'm not being sarcastic, but if MS' thinking was that Outlook is not a Web Browser, why did they add Favorites to the Outlook Menu bar, and why do they allow you to have Home Page and Offline Web Page settings for Folders in Outlook. Sounds like MS had a major change of heart, which is a pity, b/c we liked the idea that you didn't have to leave Outlook to, e.g., view a page you always use, etc.

Out staff are going to be bummed when we upgrade to 2003.

Based on customer feedback, usability studies and data, they rethought their move to make Outlook a replacement for Windows Explorer and IE. I'm not sure if the DoJ suites had anything to do with it, but it might be a factor. That it could be used by employees to circumvent company policies on browsing (when desktops were locked down) played a role too I'm sure. I don't believe the feature was used by more than a 5% of users, the vast majority of people prefer using a real browser.

You can still view frequently used pages - put the shortcut on the Shortcut nav pane. You just can't put all of them there. You can also access recently used URLs in the address bar.

    >put the shortcut on the Shortcut nav pane

What is the syntax for this? The URL syntax (either local file:/// or http://) does not seem to work. Only folders within Outlook seem to be available for me.

Offline Help refers to a My Places Bar - which seems to have since been withdrawn.

The places bar is the side bar on the File, Open and File, Save dialogs. You only want folder locations on it.

To add anything to the shortcut pane just drag it from windows explorer - files, desktop shortcuts, IE favorites...

Nothing will drag & drop onto the Shortcut Pane that I am running - Outlook 2003 version 11.5608.5606

Drag them to the group name - you can't just drop anywhere on the pane (which drives me nuts )

Thanks for the update and for the reply.

Pity MS didn't decide to let us know that!
