Changes aren't Saved (XP)

Something weird is happening to Excel documents in our organization.

On Friday, Liz spent all day updating a spreadsheet created by Anne, but when both Anne and she opened the document today, all the info Liz entered is gone! They KNOW they saved it (Anne SAW Liz hit Save), so they are both stunned. To recreate the problem, Liz made further edits to the Spreadsheet and closed it. Anne opened it on her PC, but--sure enough--the changes aren't there. I reopened the File on Liz's PC, and the edits Liz made today ARE visible.

This spreadsheet is *not* being tracked for changes, and both users have FULL CONTROL NTFS Permissions, so this isn't a permissions problem.

Can anyone explain how data is visible when Liz opens a Spreadsheet but invisible when Anne opens it?

We're all VERY confused and concerned.

NOTE: None of the Cells are hidden or locked, and neither user is comfortable enough to change Tools -> Options. These are simple spreasheets that are opened, edited, saved, and closed.

Thanks for any insight or help. We're all exasperated!

Sorry for the naive question, but are you absolutely sure that Anne and Liz are looking at the same file? Perhaps they are working on different copies of the workbook.

    Hi Hans!

Always count on you for a super-fast reply, huh!

Anyway, no it was not a naaive question. The document that was opened and closed today was in fact an E-mailed document (sorry, but they didn't tell me that ). So that explains the one today, as it was saved in the Temporary Internet Files Folder. However, there definitely does seem to be a problem with Data not being saved, as this is the 3rd time that Anne has reported changes she made to her own documents not being saved when she reopens them the next day?

Any thoughts on that? If not, we'll have to assume it's user error, although I know Anne is confident she hits save when she modifies her own files (obviously, as otherwise she'd never have any files saved LOL!)

I have never experienced problems like that with Excel. The only times data weren't saved were when I clicked "No" instead of "Yes" by accident when prompted whether I wanted to save changes...

Sounds about right, but you know how users INSIST they hit Save?!!!

Anyway, as always, thanks for your reply.

    Have a great week.

Search thru the hard drive and the network folders for xls files saved on that day. I have found people having files with the same name in multiple locations or the shortcut pointed to an older archive and not realizing it.

As Hans, has pointed out, (and I concur) this is the only situation where I have seen files "not-saved", the user saves/works on a different file.

OK. Thank you both for your input.

With Liz, I think she didn't hit 'Yes' in Outlook when asked about saving changes, but she did hit save in Excel.

The Open and Save As dialog boxes both point to the Temporary Internet Folders, so in this instance, I don't think Liz navigated Folders. I think she just hit Save and that was it.

    Regards

If you have them change the default folder where files attached to Outlook messages are saved, the problem _MAY_ disappear. This is something that we have discussed a number of times in the Lounge. In <post#=303617>post 303617</post#> there are links given to MSKB articles that explain which key in the Registry to alter. (You'll probably want the one for Outlook XP.) HTH
